  • Question
Will drinking cold water help my voice?
    Community Answer
No, cold water isn't good for your voice as it may damage your vocal cords. Drink warm water (not too hot) and warm up your vocal cords before you sing.
  • Question
Is it possible for my voice to change as I get older?
    Community Answer
Yes. Your voice will change during puberty, but will reach a pretty permanent tone as you head into adulthood. That being said, certain lifestyle choices (like smoking) can cause your voice to change over time as well.
  • Question
When I sing high, my voice gives out. How do I prevent this?
    Community Answer
Slowly work on your vocal range. Start by increasing it slowly over a long period of time and work your way up semitone by semitone until you are able to hit your desired note.
  • Question
How do I belt and use a high chest voice like Ariana does?
    Community Answer
Focus on stretching the capacity of your lungs. Most people breath incorrectly, sucking air into their chest first and only, instead of first sucking air into their diaphragm/stomach area and then their lungs/chest. You can work on this by focusing your air intake, first into your diaphragm and then filling upwards into your chest slowly, before very slowly letting the air out with a low, controlled hiss (teeth almost touching, mouth almost closed). This will allow you to 'belt'.
  • Question
    How can I sing better?
    Community Answer
Try warming up your vocal cords.
  • Question
My friends say I'm a good singer, but I think they're just trying to be nice. How will I truly know?
    Community Answer
You're right to not trust your friends about this, as they mean well and won't want to let you down. The public is never as thoughtful or supportive as friends, so find a neutral outsider who really knows good singing and ask for their opinion. For example, find a music or singing teacher. You can also record yourself and play it back to yourself and to others, and see what you and people beyond your circle of friends think.
  • Question
Is it even possible to sing like someone else? It doesn't seem realistic to me.
    Community Answer
You may not be able to sing exactly like someone else, but with some effort you can get close. You can imitate their style, range, and technique like this article describes.
  • Question
How do I become more comfortable singing in front of people I know?
    Community Answer
Practice with a small group of people and have them sing along with you. If you have to sing in front of a group out of nowhere, start by humming and then when you feel comfortable, you can start singing quietly and get louder.
  • Question
When I record my voice on camera is the camera always right, because when I sing I feel like I sing like Ariana Grande, but then when I do it on camera, my voice is different?
    Community Answer
Yes. The sound-recording on the camera is a more-correct rendering of what your voice actually sounds like. We all sound different to ourselves than we do to others.
  • Question
Is Ariana a soprano or an alto?
    Community Answer
Ariana Grande is a soprano. She sings high notes, which is referred to as soprano.
  • Question
I don't know if I can go that high and I'm scared to try because I'm afraid I will damage my voice. Will I?
    Community Answer
It is possible to damage your voice when singing out of your range if you don't use your voice correctly, so if you want to go higher than you usually do I would recommend training your voice properly. Practice breathing so that only your stomach moves, not your chest or shoulders, and push the air out from your diaphragm and not your throat. If your throat feels scratchy and sore after you sing a high note, you're hurting it. If you're going to try to do it in your chest voice like Ariana, you absolutely need to do this as it's really easy to hurt yourself that way. You can also get a pretty powerful sound from your head voice, which is where I'd recommend beginners start.
  • Question
I can almost hit the not. How can I improve?
    Community Answer
Keep practicing, do your warm ups and sing as much as you can. If you are close and you keep working at it, you will get it.
  • Question
I am half soprano and half alto. How can I do the whistle notes?
    Community Answer
Try different songs that play to each of your different singing styles. If one is stronger than the other, stick to it so you can improve. Ariana Grande is a soprano, which is how she does the whistle notes. If you're sure the soprano side of you if comfortable going into a higher range, try it! Start low and gradually go higher on a scale.
  • Question
I have a hoarse voice. What am I going to do?
    Community Answer
Be careful -- if your voice is hoarse, it is likely you have been overworking your vocal cords trying to hit notes you are not yet able to hit. Stay hydrated while you are singing, and if you notice hoarseness, do not try to sing very high until you feel better. To be better at hitting those notes, you could try a vocal teacher who will teach you their personal tips and tricks. Your body will instinctively tell you that you're going too high, so be sure to pay attention to yourself.
  • Question
How do I hit the highest note?
    Community Answer
The high notes that Ariana Grande sings are known as "whistle tones". You have to born with the capacity for extremely high notes if you want to be able to do this, otherwise it is nearly impossible to do so.
  • Question
How do I do a whistle note? I'm a soprano.
    Community Answer
Whistle notes can be very complicated. It is best to find a vocal coach that can assist you with whistle notes.
  • Question
How can I be Ariana Grande?
    Community Answer
You can't be her -- you can only be yourself. Sometimes being yourself means having idols who you may copy, but you'll still always be you.
  • Question
When I grow up, will my voice get louder, or will it stay the same?
    Community Answer
Your voice and its power doesn't depend on your age or size. You might be able to make your voice louder by practicing some vocal exercises. Check YouTube for instructional videos, or consider taking voice lessons.
  • Question
How do I know if I sound like Ariana?
    Community Answer
Ask people to listen to you sing and compare.
  • Question
What do I do if I know how to whistle sing but I always run out of breath really easily?
    Community Answer
Try whistle singing softly, and then get louder and louder. It's also about learning how to control your breathing and knowing the right time to inhale and exhale. You don't really want people to hear you inhaling deeply (which you shouldn't), and you want your inhaling to be less noticeable.
  • Question
How do I get actual famous singers to help me get to their level?
    Community Answer
It's unlikely you'd be able to do this. Famous singers are very busy, they do not give singing lessons or tutor other singers. The only way this could happen is if you were a contestant on The Voice or another competition where singers are advised by famous coaches.
  • Question
How many times do I have to do these steps?
    Community Answer
You should practice at least once a day for quickest improvement. If you have time, practice in the morning and evening.
  • Question
Ariana Grande also has a cool vocal feature that is shown when she sings random, melodic tunes over the climax part of her song, what do you call that?
    Community Answer
I believe it's called scat singing. Commonly used in jazz music but it could also be used in modern music like pop.
  • Question
A vocal coach told me that my range is quite expansive in between an alto and soprano. What does that mean?
    Community Answer
You could be a mezzo-soprano. Being able to sing both high and low as a girl usually means you're a mezzo. However, it depends on where you feel the most comfortable singing.

    What's a whistle note?
    Anna

A whistle note is an extremely high note in the whistle register. Whistle notes and whistle tones are the same thing. As an example in the song Emotions by Mariah Carey, has a whistle note. Listen to it and you will be able to tell what is the whistle note. It’s extremely high and stand out. It is the highest register of the human voice. It is above the falsetto register. • Question
If I keep singing from Karaoke websites, could that improve my singing? And if I do practice from a Karaoke video, should I sing every day, is that good for my voice?
    Anna
    Community Answer
Yes! Practicing a lot is great because it may give you more confidence and let your vocal range expand and you can see what your voice is capable of. I am not a professional at singing or any singing techniques but, singing everyday or practicing a lot is not bad for your voice. I think as long as you are not forcing or pushing your voice way too much to reach a note you cannot reach then it’s not bad for your voice. If you practice often, you may realize your voice getting better and being able to do more with it. You can tell when your voice is not capable and you are pushing it. Your voice may crack and you can feel maybe your throat get a little sore. But practicing everyday isn’t bad!
  • Question
Is it possible for anyone to sing whistle tones?
    Anna
    Community Answer
Yes, it is possible. It is more common for females to do whistle notes due to females having a higher voice than males. Does that mean males cannot? Of course not! Males can as well. You just have to work on it!
  • Question
    Can you become a soprano?
    Community Answer
Voice type is natural, you cannot "become" a soprano (but you can learn to sing higher notes). Your voice is your own unique voice, and there are plenty of famous singers who have deeper, darker voices. I recommend learning all that you can about singing techniques and vocal anatomy. Continue to practice, singing well takes plenty of practice paired with confidence!
