One easy way to do this is to start with a question. Try to choose a question that you're sure the audience will identify with to get them invested in the speech. For example, you may ask, "How many of you are afraid of public speaking?" This will also help you connect with your audience since it will let them know you have a kind of common ground to start with.

    Community Answer
I've applied for Head Girl at school (and other roles) many a time, and I've found that a good way to start off this type of speech is by saying: "Good afternoon everyone. My name is (insert your name) and I am speaking to you all today as part of my application for (whatever you want votes for). After that, I often say reasons they should vote for me e.g if you are honest, a good leader, compassionate, etc. Mention the things you will try to accomplish if people vote for you. After that you can add a few more details then wrap your speech up!
