It really depends on the specific garment. Some wool clothing is fairly easy to take care of, while some wool items need to be dry cleaned. As a material, wool is very unpredictable and it can shrink quite easily, so it's really important you follow the care instructions on the tag.

I have this beautiful wool over coat that has no obvious stains or dirt, but smells awful. I've used vinegar, and tried leaving it outside to air out, but it still smells. What can I do?

Buy cheap vodka, put a spray nozzle in the bottle, and spray it. The alcohol will kill odors and the bacteria that caused them, but will eventually evaporate. This is what my friend who works in theater says they do with fancy costumes that can’t be washed.

What can I use instead of a mesh bag?

Use a pillowcase knotted at the top to keep everything in.
  • Question
What setting do I use on my washing machine to wash wool if it doesn't have a wool setting?

You may try either delicate cotton or synthetic fabric settings - as soon as you can, set a cold wash and gentle spin. But always have in mind dry laundry volume recommended for each washing cycle by your machine's manufacturer. Should there be a cycle with up to 2 kg of the dry laundry volume, your coat will either not be washed properly or have a lot of remaining detergent.
