If your mother doesn't want you to wear makeup and you want to change her mind, begin by asking her about her reasons. Listen to them, then explain to her your reasons for wanting to. Hopefully, if you understand each other's viewpoints you will be able to reach a compromise.

This is really a personal choice. The appropriate age is when you want to, you are doing it for fun and self-expression, and you and your family or caretakers agree that it is the right time. This is commonly around puberty or young adulthood. Makeup should not feel like something you have to wear.

It's best to stay away from heavy products like foundation and eyeliner. Instead, choose lightweight products like tinted moisturizer and some sparkly eyeshadow.

Learn the basics of how to compliment the features you have. For instance, if you want to make an area look bigger, use light colors to brighten it. If you want to make something look smaller, use darker colors, instead.
  • Question
I'm 12 and want to get makeup for my birthday. What sort of things should I ask for? Is a lip gloss, a mascara and a concealer enough? I don't want to go over the top.
    Community Answer
It isn't over the top unless your parents don't want you to have too much. I would recommend a lip gloss, BB cream/concealer, mascara, and maybe some loose powder to make you look less oily. Loose powder is not needed if you don't want it.
  • Question
I am a very pale 14-year-old with hazel eyes, what makeup should I wear for school? And for an evening out?
    Community Answer
I'm 14 as well. I don't wear makeup every day, but for an evening out I apply concealer as needed, brush out and set my brows (I fill them in if they really need it), and curl and apply mascara to my lashes (comb them out before you apply mascara, it makes the mascara go on more naturally). I add a little bit of blush to my cheeks and a matte lipstick that is really close to my natural lip color. Makeup is really a personal preference, as long as your parents or guardian approve, do what you like.
  • Question
I'm 11 years old and very self conscious. My mom said I can't wear makeup, but I feel like I'm not pretty enough. What can I do?
    Community Answer
The best things you can do now are to wash and moisturize your face so it glows. Use a tiny amount of Vaseline on your eyebrows and push or comb them up. You can also use a little bit of table sugar on a warm wash cloth to gently scrub your lips and put a little Vaseline on them as well. Get lots of sleep and eat well and you will feel and look great!
  • Question
Should I let my daughter wear makeup?
    Community Answer
If you feel your daughter is mature and responsible enough to start, go for it! But try to keep it fairly natural and reasonable, and help her learn how to apply it correctly.
  • Question
What can I do to prevent oily skin while wearing makeup?
    Community Answer
There are wipes called oil blotting sheets, and some actually clean your skin and keep it from being oily, without taking off your makeup.
  • Question
What kind of makeup should a 12-year-old be using?
    Community Answer
It depends on how mature you are with your use of it. A tinted moisturizer, concealer, and maybe some mascara and powder should do. Pre-teens don't need a lot of makeup because they don't break out as much.
  • Question
How do I persuade my parents to let me put on makeup?
    Community Answer
According to my experience, don't tell them that it is for a boy or that all the other girls are wearing it. Tell them you will be responsible and will buy your own from your allowance. Also, never put too much makeup on.
  • Question
Is 11 too young to wear makeup? I just want to wear some mascara, natural eye shadow, and peachy pinkish lipstick.
    Community Answer
This really depends on you. Most girls around that age start having acne, so it can be useful. Talk to an adult about it, and if he or she agrees, I would recommend wearing neutral colors, such as brown, beige, white, gray etc. because you are younger.
  • Question
I am pale with blue eyes. What colors do you recommend for the most natural look?
    Community Answer
Natural eye shadow colors like brown and beige will work well. Choose a light pink lip gloss and light mascara. If you want foundation, use tinted moisturizer.
  • Question
I am in middle school right now and I was thinking of wearing concealer under my eyes because I have very dark circles. If I do wear concealer, will it make my circles darken more or have breakouts?
    Community Answer
It will not affect your dark circles, it will just make them look lighter while you're wearing it. It's unlikely to cause breakouts if worn only under the eyes, which is not a breakout-prone area for most people.
  • Question
My lips aren't chapped, should I still use the recommended lip product?
    Community Answer
It's up to you but wearing lip balm will keep your lips moisturized and it looks good. There's no reason not to wear it unless it bothers you.
  • Question
How thick do I apply eyeliner? How do I touch it up if I am sweating?
    Community Answer
It really depends. If you are young, I would recommend only a little, or even none. If you are older, remember, less is more. When you are sweating, say after PE, you should wipe it all off, and then reapply. Trying to fix messed up eyeliner doesn't usually work.
  • Question
I have a warm brown tone. What shades will be good with my skin?
    Community Answer
Peachy colors would look good when it comes to blush, and earthy colors would look good for your eye shadow. Earthy includes green shades as well, so if you feel experimental...

I just turned 12, I have blue eyes, red hair, and I'm SUPER pale. It is hard to find colors that look natural. I use L.A. Colors for makeup, can you suggest other brands that might work for me?
    Community Answer
The makeup brand e.l.f. is very cheap, and has many colors. You might find something there!

    Community Answer

  • Question
I'm 13 with brown eyes, glasses, and a big nose. How will I be able to put makeup on?
    Community Answer
Applying makeup should be no problem. The only difficulty is applying mascara with glasses. Your eyelashes may graze the glasses, but as long as you let the mascara dry before putting on your glasses, it should be fine.
  • Question
I have very dry, chapped lips that hurt if I wear lip gloss/stick. How do I add color to my lips without using these products?
    NY Blossom
    Top Answerer
Wear a tinted lip balm, it will moisturize them while providing a natural color.
  • Question
I am 12 years old with medium brown hair and hazel eyes. What color of mascara, lip gloss and concealer should I wear that won't run if I'm on the track team?
    Community Answer
Brown mascara and a light pink lip gloss are good choices for your coloring. Unless you have a lot of blemishes, you probably don't need concealer. If you do, choose a shade a bit lighter than your skin color and dot it on sparingly.
  • Question
My skin is too pale for the lightest shade of concealer. What should I do?
    Community Answer
Just blend really well and make sure the concealer you have is as close as possible to your foundation, if you use it. Foundation helps cover up blemishes, too, depending on what you use.
  • Question
What colors would look natural on someone with tan skin, brown eyes, and black hair?
    Community Answer
Try a lighter color like pink, blue or green -- just to stand out. If you don't want to stand out, you could try peach or beige.
  • Question
I am pale and freckly with green eyes. What eyeshadow should I wear?
    Community Answer
I'm the same way! I just opt for natural tones that complement my skin with a little shimmer. Black mascara will really make your green eyes stand out. And for future reference, never use concealer or foundation to try to hide your freckles or pale skin, these are beautiful qualities!
  • Question
I wear foundation, concealer, tinted brow gel or pencil, bronzer, blush, highlighter, heavy eyeshadow, eyeliner, mascara, lip liner, and lip stick. Is that too much?
    Community Answer
Do whatever you want. It really doesn't matter what anyone else thinks! if you're happy with that amount, and you're only doing it for yourself, then that's perfect. Just remember to take it all off at the end of the day, and keep your eyes open for signs of any possible allergic reaction.
  • Question
What warm eye shadow color would work with light brown skin?
    Community Answer
It's best to try to match your eye shadow to your skin tone. For light brown skin, choose a mid-tone brown with red or orange undertones to add warmth.
  • Question
I'm pale, have black hair and brown eyes. What kind of colors of eyeliner and mascara would suit me?
    Community Answer
Use eyeliner and mascara that matches your eyelashes. There are many shades of dark brown and black from which to choose.
  • Question
I am 11 and I want makeup for my birthday, but I don't want anything too dramatic. What should I ask for?
