Why does the English alphabet have 26 letters and the Greek has 24 letters?

It comes down to linguistics. Today's English alphabet is based upon the Latin alphabet of the Romans. The Latin alphabet was based on the ancient Greek alphabet, which is what the modern Greek alphabet is heavily based on. Even between the English and Latin alphabets, there are differences. For instance, the Romans used the letter 'i' as both a consonant and a vowel, whereas in English we use two different letters, 'i' and 'j'. The Latin 'i' was based on the ancient Greek iota. Greek also uses one letter to express a sound that in English we would use two for, such as theta making the 'th' sound which is two letters in English.
