Building a Stylish Wardrobe
Putting together the outfit of your dreams can be an absolute blast, or an absolute nightmare. Either you’re touched by inspiration and one piece flows perfectly into the next and you’ve got the ensemble ready to go in five minutes flat, or you’re sitting on your floor and pulling your hair out as you wonder why nothing in your closet seems to match.
What gives?
Well, the secret to building the perfect outfit is building the perfect wardrobe. That way, you’ve got a cohesive and versatile closet of clothing to mix and match, rather than a hodge-podge mountain of clothing chaos (but then again, some of us like it that way—more power to ya). Having a good wardrobe with which to build outfits is like having a well-stocked pantry with which to bake a cake: if you don’t have the right ingredients, you won’t get very far.
So, where do you start? Glad you asked.
Find your colors.
There are lots of ways to do this. The easiest way is to just think of your favorite color, one that you love to wear, and buy clothing in all shades, maybe including some complementary colors for variety. Some people like to go with color seasons
, or swatches of color that flatter their skin
or hair tone. However you do it, getting a few consistent, dominant colors into your closet is a great way to make an automatically cohesive wardrobe.
Get some staples.
Staples are basic clothing items around which you can build an outfit. They might be a versatile pair of pants that goes well with practically any top, or a set of T-shirts that’ll match plenty of different bottoms. Usually, staples are neutral colors like blacks, whites, or grays, and lay a good foundation for adding bursts of color on top.
Look at your style inspos. There’s a saying in the art world: Every good artist steals from other good artists. There’s no shame in stealing someone’s look! It’s how you develop your own sense of style and taste. Think of someone whose sense of style really impresses you, then think about why that is. Are they totally modern? Adorably retro? Entirely unique? Try to cop some pieces that fit their vibe, and work from there!
