Celebrities Canceled for Questionable Reasons
It seems like conversations about “cancel culture” are everywhere these days. Some people complain that it’s a real phenomenon and a big deal. Other people say complaints of being “canceled” are overblown, and that few people who are canceled ever actually suffer long-term consequences. It’s a hot-button issue, but sometimes it’s just plain goofy. We’re here to talk about the goofy parts, so here are some celebs that were canceled for controversial reasons.
- The Chicks (previously the Dixie Chicks) might be the first-ever instance of someone being canceled. Their crime? Being against war.
- Rebecca Black was proto-canceled back in the early 2010s after the release of her hit song “Friday.” People mocked Black ruthlessly for being a young person having fun with music. Luckily, the singer grew, improved, and came back with a vengeance, and now she’s writing some of the coolest music you can hear these days.
- In 2004, Janet Jackson was practically blacklisted from the music industry after a wardrobe malfunction during the Super Bowl halftime show left her embarrassingly exposed. It wasn’t her fault, and she didn’t deserve any of the backlash, but the damage to her career was already done.
- Megan Fox has been on a rollercoaster of a career. At the peak of her fame, she was canceled for being… too pretty? Critics attacked her for making women look bad, particularly for her role in the movie Jennifer’s Body. The kicker is that the movie is satire, and Fox has spoken about being a victim of Hollywood’s predatory standards many times since.
- Brendan Fraser, everyone’s favorite Tarz— we mean, George of the Jungle—was blacklisted from Hollywood for speaking out about the abuse he received from major players in the industry. Thankfully, he seems to have bounced back, appearing in recent movies like The Whale.
So, what do you think? Are these real instances of cancel culture? Is cancel culture real?
