Frame the question with a compliment Giving a compliment is a great lead-in for asking someone out. It will show them that you notice their good qualities, appreciate who they are, and want to know more about them. Examples: “You have such an awesome sense of humor! Would you like to go see a stand up comedy show with me this weekend?” “You’re so much fun to talk to! Would you like to get together for coffee tomorrow?” Be direct Since tone can easily be misinterpreted in text messages, be clear that you’re asking them out on a date (i.e., clarify your intentions and avoid just asking them to “hang”). Examples: “May I take you out on a formal date?” “Would you like to go on a date with me?” Provide details Let your crush know what you have in mind as far as time, location, and activities for your date so they know what to expect. Examples: “I have tickets for a special pop-up dinner this Friday night at the gazebo in the park. Would you like to come as my date?” “There’s a special noir film screening this Thursday night around 8:00. Are you interested in being my movie date?” Be patient If your crush doesn’t text back right away, be patient and avoid sending follow-up messages. If it has been more than several hours no reply, assume the answer is no and feel free to send an understanding follow-up text. Examples: “Hey, I haven’t heard back from you so I’m guessing that’s a no. No worries, friend!” “I haven’t heard back so I’m guessing you’re not interested and that’s okay, no hard feelings!”
