Unit Title: Introduction to William Shakespeare
10/01 - 10/29 (Four Weeks)
Unit Summary:
Students will read and analyze one of Shakespeare's major works, learn about his cultural relevance (including ways he immediately changed society and his enduring impact on later works), and gain an appreciation for the playwriting process by writing short plays of their own.
State Standard:
9-10.RL.9 Analyze how an author draws on and transforms source material in a specific work (e.g., how Shakespeare treats a theme or topic from Ovid or the Bible or how a later author draws on a play by Shakespeare).
Student Goals:
1. Be able to analyze and identify major themes and imagery in Shakespeare
2. Be able to identify and explain uses of metaphor and determine the significance of word/phrase choice
3. Learn the importance of character development and strong, complex human motivation
4. Demonstrate understanding of plot development and writing techniques
Student Objectives:
1. Read Shakespeare's Hamlet
2. Complete a series of quizzes and a final exam demonstrating understanding of the play's plot, themes, and imagery
3. Demonstrate writing skill and understanding of narrative construction by writing a four-act play with one act due each week of the unit
Materials:
1. Hamlet
2. Hamlet (2000 film)
Week 1
Day 1
Introduction to Hamlet. Hand out unit packet including vocabulary words and major assignments. Hand out copies of Hamlet. Explain play assignment due at the end of unit. Students will be required to write a four-act play with one act due each week.

Day 2
Discussion of the first half of Act I. Analysis of themes and imagery. Discussion of character development.
Student HW: Finish Act I

Conclude discussion of Act I
