Lou, a homeless man, wakes up in an alley somewhere in Murphy City to the sound of the meal truck that comes every Tuesday morning. He’s nervous because the driver is new, then incredibly nervous when the man tells him they’re picking homeless people up and hiding them in the Murphy Hospital so they’re not arrested in advance of a Governor’s visit. Lou finally agrees to go. He still has serious misgivings, however, and nearly stops himself from going several times. Finally, he finds himself in an unused wing of the hospital. The decorations are old (‘70s old), and the tables/chairs/etc. all have the same look: decades past their prime but almost totally unused. As he enters, Lou meets Craig, a sort of liaison between the homeless and the hospital, and sees a few people he knows, including a man named Dave, who is throwing a fit about some rule he doesn’t like. He also sees Darla, a woman he remembers, and Tony, a guy he kind of knows and seems to quickly develop good rapport with. The next day, Dave is suspiciously missing. A few hours later, after an altercation with the training staff, Darla is, too. The guests are awakened late in the night by Dr. Pitchford, who is furious about the way the clients have been acting. He warns them to calm down and is generally hateful. It’s very obvious he looks down on them. Time goes on. Lou develops pneumonia and is very ill. It’s rumored that the program will close due to Pitchford’s concern, but Lou’s so sick he knows he can’t survive on the streets for a while. Finally, Lou and Tony are the only residents left. Then Tony leaves. Lou is told he’ll be allowed to stay until he has healed. He sleeps. Later in the evening, he’s awakened by pounding at the door leading out. He stands, falls, is too sick to move. He sees Pitchford and Craig walk in but can’t do anything as they prick him with a needle. Story ends.
