Basics * A curling sheet is 146 feet to 150 feet long (45m to 46m) and 14.5 to 16.5 feet wide (4.4m to 5.0m) * There are two houses with a 12-foot (3.66m) bullseye (button) on opposite end of the sheet * Teams shoot at one button during odd-numbered ends and switch for even-numbered ends * Each team has eight rocks, and they alternate delivering the rocks until all of them have been thrown * One player throws a rock while two teammates sweep the ice to control the trajectory of the rock Scoring * A team scores points by shooting rocks closer to the center of the button than the other team's rocks * Each rock that’s closer to the center of the button compared to the other team’s closest rock is one point. For example, if team 1’s closest rock is 8 feet away from the center and team 2 has a rock at 4 feet, 6 feet, and 9 feet from the center, team 2 would score two points. * A team can score a maximum of 8 points per end Teams * Each team has four players: the skip, third, second, and lead * The skip is the captain and usually throws last * The third is like the vice-captain. They sweep the first four rocks and shoot the 5th and 6th rocks * The second sweeps the first two rocks, throws the 3rd and 4th rocks, and sweeps the final four rocks * The lead throws the first two rocks and sweeps the remaining six The Hammer * The hammer refers to the team that throws last in the end * The game starts with a draw. Each team throws a rock, and whichever team is closer to the center of the button begins with the hammer * In the next end, the hammer goes to the team who did not score in the previous end * If neither team scores, the hammer stays with the same team Finish * A game is over at the end of 10 ends * If the game is tied, it goes to overtime * The team with the most points at the end of the game wins
