Subject: 11th Grade U.S. History Unit Title: The Vietnam War 05/12 - 06/09 Unit Summary: Students will learn about the political and military events leading to U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War. They will learn about major events that took place during the conflict and about American perception of the war at home. As the final unit and project for this term, students will be expected to demonstrate strong writing and critical thinking skills, research and cite multiple sources, and present a strong analysis of a topic related to society, politics, or the military in the Vietnam-era United States. State Standard: Integrate information from diverse sources, both primary and secondary, into a coherent understanding of an idea or event, noting discrepancies among sources. Student Goals: 1. Understand the events leading to the Vietnam War 2. Understand the progress of the war 3. Describe the cultural rift that developed between conservative and liberal Americans 4. Explain the reduction and withdrawal of American military forces in Vietnam 5. Identify lasting changes that the Vietnam Era caused in American society Student Objectives: Write a research paper with a full bibliography on a topic related to the Vietnam War. Students may choose from a list of suggested topics or submit topics for approval. Papers must be 5 to 8 pages long and double spaced. Students must exhibit critical thinking skills and present a thoughtful and well-written analysis of their topic, using multiple sources and examining multiple points of view. Materials 1.
