Plot point outline for untitled comedy short story. This is written as a skeleton for people who lean more toward being discovery writers.
1. Dave, a failing musician, is returning home for his dad’s funeral
2. Meets a harried, pretty girl who is freaking out because she lost her purse
3. Helps her find purse, but in confusion misses flight to Kenosha
4. No car, no flight out again until after funeral, but could just barely make it if they took a car
5. Conversation during which girl, Kelly, finally agrees to drive him out of guilt
6. Awkward silent drive at first
7. Stop at a gas station
8. He spots her buying mace but doesn’t say anything
9. Has been typing on his phone a lot, keeping himself occupied on boring drive writing lyrics, etc.
10. Kelly, sleep deprived and angry, says he’s being rude
11. Fight ensues
12. Dave so pissed he makes her pull over and starts walking
13. She’s driving slowly beside him, trying to convince him to get back in (though she says she doesn’t know why)
14. Gets back in car
15. Kelly said if he’s a jerk again she’ll mace
16. Dave says he’s not a serial killer
17. She says it doesn’t matter
18. Morning. Nearly crash when Kelly dozes off at wheel
19. Dave offers her an energy pill he has stashed in his wallet
20. Kelly turns chatty after taking it
21. Dave is into conversation and they miss exit and drive for several hours
22. Pull over at rest stop to sleep
23. Neither can, so they hit the road again
24. Back toward Kenosha, energy pill wearing off
25. Dave suggests hotel, but Kelly says no
26. Kenosha drawing closer
27. Dave says he can just not go
28. She says he should, that this is silly
29. Closer yet
30. Dave says “C’mon, skip the exit,” and she does
This format of plot outline allows the writer to note key points he’d like to address without constricting himself too much. New scenes can be added (and old ones deleted) easily this way, as well.
