How’s that for a Christmas-y greeting! lol I’ve come across a startling fact. We are 6 months behind in NFD|DUP It doesn’t seem that anyone is actively patrolling that category and cleaning it up.

I will admit to dropping the ball on that one. I preferred NAB to NFDs and didn’t do them.

Another category that needs extreme help is NFD|INC. We seem to be 5 months behind there. There are several other categories as well, but they are not as high traffic. I’ve gone through the list and removed any admin names that don’t seem to be actively patrolling that category. If I took someone off that I shouldn’t have, I apologize, please put yourself back on… But I think I’m accurate. There are several blank categories to claim.

Thanks Teresa - of course your name wasn’t on the list, but the help is appreciated. And no complaints, you do amazing stuff with NAB! Keep it up!

There are over 1200 NFD|DUPs and about 220 NFD|INCs

I tried to do some categories earlier this afternoon between the dup, inc, & acc. The impossible cat. is caught up except for 1 article. I do agree that the list should be ‘maintained’. If they do decide to return and edit, they can add their name back. Thanks much to Mel for straightening all this up =]

The reason I never work on the NFD|dup category is because I don’t know when it’s better to merge or do a deletion, so any clarification about this would be extremely helpful. Thanks!

We’re down around a thousand right now. @Elocina
I usually click the duplicate title… make a quick determination as to which article is the better quality one… complete sentences, paragraphs in steps, pictures, etc… Then I’ll check the tagged article. If it has something to add, I’ll move that over before deletion. If it adds nothing to the better article, I just delete it and move on. I think the “add the good stuff to the better article” is what is known as a “Q&D merge”

I can give you my thinking on this. Other’s may take a bit different approach and are fee to add their $0.02 worth. I categorize NFD|DUPs into four (4) categories. These are listed in the order of common occurrence. Those at the top of the list occur the most. 1. Articles that just need to be deleted. Causes: Typo in the name, almost no content, No chance of the article coming back as a dup, or article could come back with a different meaning (interpretation) of the title. 2. Articles that need to be redirected. Causes: An article with a similar title that can’t be interpreted a different way, articles that will likely come back again as a dup. Think key search terms - two ways phrasing the same title - both should remain but they both need to have the same content. 3. Articles that need to be merged (and either redirected or deleted). 4. Articles that need to stay. They really aren’t dup and they have different purposes. I hope this helps.

Just a reminder that of the several things you can do, redirecting is probably the one to do least. If you tie up a distinct title in a redirect, it’s unlikely to ever get written (whereas a deleted title can easily be started again). So unless you’re 110% sure that a title is exactly interchangeable as another one (regardless of the content), don’t use redirects.

Agreed, but here is the type of duplicates you would
want to redirect: Make Playdoh Make Play Dough
I think Mel’s approach here is a really solid one. It’s all about identifying which of those 4 buckets an article falls in. Of course this is often harder to do than it seems!

Exactly. Thanks for the example Mel!
It’s the call for admins soon is it not?

Peter, Yes - you will find info on that here

Update - We are now in August for NFD|DUPs - We have taken over a month off in the last 5 days! Now we are only 5 months back! Thanks everyone and keep up the good work!
With help, I’ve caught up the following NFD Categories. ADV/DAN/IMP/SOC JOK needs some help. DUP still needs A LOT of help. We are near the end of August so we have caught up almost 2 months, but have a long way to go. Christmas vacation is over and I’m back to work so I wont have as much time and need help with these two categories. Mel
