_ The short version:_ If you really like manual categorization (ie categorizing outside of the Categorizer tool), check out this Categorizer Backlog project sheet !

_ More details:_ We found a bug a while back (fix still pending) that means a weird subset of articles aren’t going into the Categorizer - most are, but it depends on the order of events. The gist seems to be that if an article gets a template on it before it gets its topic-based category, that “looks” to the Categorizer like it already has a category (the template-based one), so it’s not including them in the tool’s to-dos. To be clear, this isn’t crazy worrying, because most of these articles are de-indexed (not ready for readers and therefore not in search) anyway [the few that were indexed, @Artemi7 helped us fix in a wee mini project, so thanks Artemi!]… If they later had their template removed and were indexed, they’d generally go into the tool then and get categorized at that point. So, it’s not an *emergency* or panic material… but, it does mean that there are a few hundred topics out there that could be categorized and aren’t. So as is, passionate topic experts and enthusiasts are less likely to find them and fix them up, wiki wiki style.

With that background in mind, I was wondering if anyone wants to help categorize these manually? If we don’t do a project now, they’ll go into the tool once we get a chance to fix the bug… but I figured some wikiGnomes out there might like the idea of tidying it all up even before then. It’d also be a decent chance to review this batch of de-indexed stuff to see if it needs either harsher action (NFD?) or can actually be put live… or if it’s just fine where it is, until someone with the topic know-how stumbles upon it (much more likely if it’s categorized right!).

If anyone is interested, I can put together a spreadsheet with an initial batch, to see what you think, and we can go from there.

I’d be interested!

I’m interested as well.

I want to, but don’t know how much time I can set aside for it.

Oh cool! That’s great to hear, @XxVxX and @Hailey-Girges . Thanks for being game to take a look:slight_smile:

Ok, I put together a little trial run sheet here, just to get you something quickly - it’s got about 100 articles, I think, and just a little tracking box for now. But if you guys dig it, we can grow it in due course, by pulling the rest of the articles from the database (a batch at a time, maybe?) and putting on a Leaderboard and things like that.

Here’s the start: Categorizer Backlog Project

Oh, and let me know if the spreadsheet format works for you guys as is… we can always change it if not!

Oops @Galactic-Radiance sorry, we cross-posted - didn’t mean to ignore you! In total there are quite a lot to do (a thousand or so, I think, though I haven’t looked closely at the rest yet), so there may well be more to do even if you can’t get to any right away. Perhaps after your trip!

@XxVxX Cheers for being the first to wade into it!

@Anna No problem! I’m enjoying this project.

I’m interested - I used to do manual anyway! I might not be on for a few weeks or may have limited access here, so there’s that. But I’ll be happy to help and will try it out :)

Hi Anna, So far I categorized two articles because I have never categorized articles a lot since the beginning. Before I make any further mistakes or continue it if the categorization was wrong, I request your feedback.

We’re down to just two in this queue!

@Anna Which ones are the ones that aren’t categorized yet? (I am interested in this project too, by the way!)

Wow, quick work!

@TheArtsPerson The ones without usernames are the only ones not categorized yet - people are putting their usernames next to each title once they categorize them.

@Vishshua I’m not as solid in my knowledge of the category tree as some other wikiGnomes here are, so they may be able to provide better feedback! The way to go, generally, is to look for the closest and most specific category match on the Category Tree, though:  https://www.wikihow.com/wikiHow:Categories

Ok, you guys are *fast*… That’s awesome! I’ll put a new batch of topics up later today!

@Anna Thanks!

@Anna Thank you.:slight_smile:Okay. I asked because may be if I end making wrong categorization, it may instead double the work. Anyways, I’ll categorize only those articles that I’m completely sure of. Kudos to the contributors for working in lightening speed!

Sounds like a good MO, @Vishshua

I’ve put in some more progress tracking here - I have to head offline for a little bit now but if someone wants to “kill off” those final 2, I’ll pull a new batch from the database and put it in the sheet when I’m back on, later today:slight_smile:

Finished the last two!

Yay! Great job everyone!

That’s awesome!

Go @Hailey , @XxVxX , @Caeiia , @Byankno1 , @Zodiaw , and @Vishshua !!

I just put a new batch in - went with 250 now, since you guys are so efficient!

Woo! By the way, this is a really cool Google Slides doc that you made. I didn’t even know you could do so much with the app.

Hah thanks @Caeiia ! Google Sheets rather than Slides but, you can get fancy with a bit of formatting… You can get way way way fancier than this, in fact, but it’s fun to keep track of our progress with projects, so I do what I can:wink:
