A lot of users end up almost getting missed. For example, this is the third page of the new user log just now (Edit: crappy screenshot, but there’s a string of 6 or more users in a row on that page just below where I cut off that weren’t welcomed):

The first and second pages of users were almost all welcomed, but this third page seems to have gotten left behind. Lately I’ve seen users not welcomed within a DAY of signing up quite often. When welcoming, it’d be best if you just start from the top and welcome any unwelcomed users straight down the list. People being skipped by welcomers appears to be what leads to them getting lost in the new user log. Just a heads up, -Mike

Just my opinion but I have a feeling one reason this occurs is because people welcome based off of the recentchanges page, not the new users page… only a few new users would be visible in recent changes so it would make it easy to unintentionally skip past a few people.

In the few times that I have tried welcoming, I did it because I saw a profile box update in RCPatrol or because the recent changes box said that a new user had joined.

Not everybody uses the New Users log to welcome… I almost never do. I think of that log as more of a cleanup area than a first line of defense, because I usually try to just use RC or whatever pops up instead.

I welcome while I am patrolling. I welcome them if they made any edits. That’s probably why so many of them were skipped.

I use the New Users log . . . however, I don’t welcome frequently. Sorry to the un-welcomed new users!

Yes, it’s good to check this list and go further back to see if anyone got missed. Thanks for the reminder Mike!

Hey you know most users with confusing username are not welcomed, because person who welcomes, are confused and they do not want to put any wrong template on their talk page. I see this thing for most username containing non-latin words, and probably with most Indian names which aren’t understood by most users from other place.

I used to use the RC Box widget to welcome users.

I agree with IamSH, most people decide to skip those users becuase they don’t know if it’s bad or not because they don’t understand it. If I don’t understand I ask for help or re-read the username policy.

Some people like to end their wikiHow time each day by welcoming five users off the bottom of the list. Maybe someone can post a link to the New Users Log.

Yeah, that would be http://www.wikihow.com/index.php?title=Special%3ALog&type=newusers&user=&page=

I’ve been very lazy with the welcome. I used to run through the new users list 3-4 times per week, and I’d go page to page until I found no more red talk pages. I need to get back to that.

Why do you have a “welcome” button, as I do not?

Seconded.

Thirded.:expressionless:

That’s 'cause he has either Illyism’s Firefox wH toolbar installed, or the Google Chrome extension. I have that button too.

If anyone wants to have a free welcome link (next to each person in the logs), the Chrome extension (Illyism’s version) or Illyism’s Firefox toolbar has it. You can also customize what template you want. Please note that the toolbar for Firefox 5.0 (modified by Chris and the wikiHaus) does not have the auto welcome included. Firefox 3.6 version that Illyism has created it for, does.

I have the button as well, and find it very useful. But it’s also nice to send a personal welcome every once in a while (with {{welcomelinks}} after the short message) if you come across a good edit or promising new article by the unwelcomed user.

Please note that if you have Illyism’s extension or toolbar, and you experience any bugs on the site, you should report that you have it when you report whatever issue you are having. Sometimes it causes problems on wikiHow, like with the thumbs up feature.
