As I mentioned in the wikiHaus Lab update , the team has just released containerless design for small screens on 1000 articles. We now need to go through the list of articles and check for any bugs or issues that may be showing up. Would you like to help?

We’re hopeful that articles with standard formatting are ok, but there are so many edge cases like math tables, custom wikiText, code etc, that additional sets of eyes would be really helpful! The goal is to find any potential issues before pushing the design out any further. Here’s an example of an issue that was found where the font size on linked text was sliiiightly larger than the surrounding text.

Additionally, if you happen to know of an article with special formatting or wikiText that isn’t on the list, feel free to pop a link to it in the second tab in the sheet and we can enable containerless for the article so you can check it!

If you’re interested, here’s what to do:

  1. Go to the spreadsheet here .
  2. Write your name in the “Claimed by” column for up to 10 articles that you will be testing.
  3. Open the article on a small screen. You could use a mobile phone or make your desktop browser small, but Ipads are generally medium so will likely be too big for this task. Add the device and browser you are using eg iPhone10 Chrome in Column C.
  4. Look for anything out of the ordinary. The containerless design will show full-width images and no grey background by design. But there may be a code box that runs over the page, a heading that doesn’t fit, a table that doesn’t look right, a font that looks too big etc.
  5. Note any feedback or issues you find in column E.
If there are no issues, you can simply put a dash: - That way we can easily filter out the issues from the good ones!
  6. Check the checkbox in column D once you have reviewed the article.

Optional: Add any new articles that would be good to text in the “Other articles to test” tab.

You’re welcome to repeat and do multiple rounds of 10 articles but please be cognizant of allowing all to participate. The goal here is not to get through them all in a matter of hours, but to really check through each one to find any bugs. In order to respect different timezones, I have set aside a chunk of articles for members who may not be available to participate straight away. If the first 700 articles are reviewed quickly, please leave the last 300 aside for anyone who has not participated in the project but may want to in the next 24 hours. The last 300 can be claimed by anyone who has not had the chance to claim any in the sheet previously, and depending on how the project is going, will open up for everyone in 24 hours.

Feel free to tag or reach out to anyone you think might want to help with this project!

Hi Jayne,

I opened 10 articles on my Samsung phone. I think @Buterflie was keen on working on a project?! So I am tagging her.

Yes, you’re welcome to do as many groups of 10 as you’d like:slight_smile:

And anyone is welcome to help with this project, so feel free to tag, I just didn’t want to make any assumptions:slight_smile:

The easiest way to see the containerless version if using a desktop or laptop is to shrink your browser size down (probably as narrow as it will go!) and then open the link. You should see that the images are full width.

It’s great that you’re being so thoughtful and considerate @SkiC . The goal is to get through these in the next couple of weeks, so there’s definitely no rush. We want to focus on picking up any potential bugs and not how fast we can get through them:slight_smile:

However, we do have 300 put aside, so you can keep going on some more if you’d like. We’ll keep rows 700-1000 for others:slight_smile:

Well, we’re done with the first 700:slight_smile:

Thanks for your stellar help @SkiC . Let’s leave the others for anyone who has done less than 20 who might like to do some over the weekend. We’ll open any remaining ones up next week.

For anyone who is new to the project: feel free to replace “Holding” in column B with your name and check some articles to help us complete the project. I have filtered out the completed ones:slight_smile:

Hey there! I love projects like these, I’d be more than happy to help! I couldn’t help out right away even though I saw this thread because I was feeling unwell yesterday. I really appreciate the fact that there was a provision for those who couldn’t help out right away! I’m getting down to helping out today that I’m feeling better:slight_smile:

Hi,

I did another ten from the held ones. I hope that’s okay. I had done only 10 before.

Heya, I opened up the remaining ones for everyone:slight_smile:

Yes, I think everyone’s had an opportunity to participate, so we can open them all to anyone who would like to continue working on the project. You can do as many groups of 10 as you’d like.

@SkiC moving forward it’s probably best to confirm with me before going ahead with making these decisions yourself. Thanks!

I just thought I could because of this message. Also, does it have to be in groups of 10?

No worries! Yes, we still want to stick to groups of 10:slight_smile:

what’s containerless design?

Containerless design is where the content of the page isn’t in any containers - images take up the whole width of the screen, and there’s no extra background. In general, this helps articles and our site feel more up-to-date, modern, clean, and less boxy.
