Thanks for coming up with a solution to a problem that these pages face, @R2_d2000
. I like the idea - especially if it means saving time and frustration.
I’m curious to hear if others have further feedback :)
Even though I’m supposed to be on a wikiBreak, I’m here :P. Yes, I think it’s a great idea, especially with all the commotion going on today.
Eh… I’m not 100% opposed, but I also don’t really see the point? I don’t often see the ANB or similar pages get vandalized by multiple users in rapid succession, and even in cases like that, most of the vandals don’t patrol each other’s edits, so you can always go into RCP and just roll them all back simultaneously. And the ANB in particular has had some format changes in the time I’ve been here, so if we did make backups of the pages, we’d have to update them whenever a page gets a major change (and if they’re fully protected, that limits it to admins who can update the backups). Even in the worst cases of vandalism, I can always restore the last good if I check the last 500 edits, and I’ve never had to go any further than that.
Maybe we can have a button that does this in one-click. So bascially there would be a button that says “restore sandbox” or “restore help team” and it would copy the contents of that page back with two clicks.
We can also do something like what Wikipedia does - put a link to the last good revision in a template, then include that template in the page. Then the page can be restored without removing the template. See Wikipedia’s sandbox for more info.

I agree with Galactic Radiance, I don’t consider it hard to go back and find the good version, but if it makes it easier for other people, go ahead!
Good luck!
Actually, I’m having visions of a feature where - with a touch of just one button - it copies the good text of a good edit (non graphical - and + signs ignored inside the diff page), and with a few clicks to head back to the original page, can go into a page and with a Select All, use a keyboard shortcut to paste in the original unvandalized edit. That’s what vision I’ve been seeing for a long time, but never thought to mention it to the community before - for lack of time.
It would best be given to Admins and Boosters alike - maybe with a few exceptions on the up-and-coming non-rights people who know the system well. We’d still have to check the edit for mistakes (in slight cases, especially at first).
Interesting idea. I would probably be on board only if there is evidence of this being an ongoing problem. Correct me if I’m wrong, but it looks like the vandalism on the ANB earlier today was an isolated incident. R2 - if you’re noticing that “some pages are repeatedly vandalized or edited by multiple users before an edit can be rolled back”, then I’d be interested to see other examples of specific incidents. Vandalism on the Help Team page and ANB is uncommon (usually a case of a malicious sock engaging in retaliation for a report/block), and the Sandbox is regarded to be a “no rules, bad edits allowed” testing environment. So IMO, not sure if we need to change our current processes in dealing with mass vandalism. Manual revert via page history is enough to respond to even the most severe cases. It just takes some time and hawk eyes to find the last good revision. A lot of us admins already have hawk eyes from years of vandalism fighting
Aw, the idea is deleted so I’ll never know what this idea was. Should have been earlier.
