I have started an existing images directory for people with articles without images here
.
Please add yours or any you like, thank you.
Are you part of the wikiHow team? I’m kind of lost to be honest on how this works.
^ No, not from what I can tell through listing the User Group Rights.
@PicturePerfect
, I really appreciate how eager you are to help
The thing is, though, we already have an image directory built into the software, here
. While they’re not exactly categorized, you can run searches by image title and by user, which makes it fairly easy to narrow down what you’re looking for. Is that what you were aiming for with this?

Pardon me while I go file a bug report for the bug on that page, hah.** But when that’s working and not throwing up any errors, I agree with Alex that the Special:ListFiles
page is generally a good place to go for this! Special
has the most recent stuff, too.
I like the idea of appropriately/smartly reusing more images around the site on articles that need visuals. I like it so much I wrote an article about it recently, as it happens
- https://www.wikihow.com/Reuse-a-wikiHow-Image-on-wikiHow
, for anyone interested.
So I like where you’re coming from @PicturePerfect
! I just think it might be a tall mountain to climb, trying to put all helpful images on one wikiHow project page though - there would just be too many, I think. Maybe try out those tools for a while and see how they work for you? The other thing I find helpful when I’m looking to reuse images is just browsing around topics similar to the one I’m working on. Depending on the topic, this can help you find images that cover the same kinds of concepts and have similar steps. It’s a bit of a hunt but sometimes it works out great. I know @MissLunaRose
and @WikihowSaver
have reused images like this a lot, and @Galactic-Radiance
and I have dabbled in it, too. Any tips for how to find helpful/fitting images, guys?
** Edit: bug fixed yay
I’m referring to illustrations here - I can’t speak for the photography angle.
When it comes to reusing images, I just do a random search for articles and pull the image codes from there. I’ve found that using a reverse Google Image search can also pull up articles that have art with similar art styles, but that doesn’t pull up nearly all of the articles with a similar image style, so it’s not my favorite thing. To be honest, I kind of wish that things on ListFiles could be categorized per sub-artist, because there are a lot
of images from the Wikivisual team and sometimes I’m only looking for one specific style. But I know that’s not feasible.
From what I’ve found, the most important thing for making images reusable is to aim for generic images that can be reused with almost anything. For example, an image of a person talking with another person could be used for lots of article steps regarding social interactions. If you really, really specify an image’s content, then it’s kind of hard to reuse it - which makes images that contain text strings really hard to reuse. If you want an image to be easily reusable, it’s best to go with things that are generic, don’t have text strings, and are of the same style. Images obviously done by multiple artists on a single article can be quite annoying to the eyes, to be honest, but maybe that’s just me.
When it comes to images of a particular style, I look for articles drawn by the same artist. This can involve a bit of searching, but once I’ve found several articles, it usually works.
When reusing my own images, I actually keep a copy-and-paste directory, so I can easily add the images. Here’s a small section from it:
Then I have my images saved in an organized folder, so I can look at the selection of pictures easily, and find the corresponding image name so I can insert it.
