(note that I’m not sure in which category this belongs; feel free to move this thread)

I think that featured articles are too far down on the front page, especially since featured articles are typically extremely well-written and get checked for usefulness, quality, etc.

I would propose that featured articles be higher up on the wikiHow homepage (in my opinion, the optimal order would be trending, featured, and expert co-authored).

Thoughts?

I’m pretty sure this would require some level of redesigning the front page and/or changing how many FAs we would list, given how large the Featured Articles section is (especially compared to the Trending and Expert Co-Authored sections). Do you have any suggestions for how to rework it, or how many FAs to list instead?

(One other minor thing to keep in mind is that Rising Stars are actually listed at the very end of the Featured Articles feed. Since RS’s are new articles and may not always meet the quality standards for FAs, moving the Featured Articles section means we might need to account for where Rising Stars would go, too.)

Maybe the trending articles can be first (6 articles preferably, but 12 might be fine too), then the featured articles (12 or 18 articles in total). Then add the expert co-authored articles after the green part (especially good since the green part talks about credibility). I think adding RS’s to the end of the FA section should still work in this case, as they won’t cause much of a problem anyway (they were on the front page to begin with, so a placement change probably wouldn’t hurt readership).

Well, why I mentioned RS’s isn’t about readership; it has to do with what appears on the feed (if I recall correctly, we only allow about 4 RS’s on the home page at a time, which means the number of FAs displayed could get bumped down for the RS’s), and quality. The quality of a RS doesn’t have to be on the same level as a FA, because it’s a new article boosted from NAB, rather than a community-curated article that’s gone through several layers of review or a WRM/SE article that gets extensive review from the content team.

I don’t personally have any thoughts on moving things around, but going off on a tangent, my meds are wearing off don’t judge me, I wonder if you might’ve inadvertently raised something to look at with the design… a lot of websites have been putting emphasis on their content experts or other “proof of authority” on their homepages because of Google and other search engines penalizing content that lacks authority. Moving the expert content further down the page would make it harder to see the “authoritative” content at a glance, but the credibility banners/info require scrolling to view anyway. And… I don’t really know where I’m going with that, but staff’s going to be looking at this thread anyway, so I’ll just post it in case it gives them anything to consider and then let other people give their opinion on potentially moving the sections around.

All good food for thought. I don’t think the Home Page is scheduled for any updates other than the stories at the moment, but this could be a consideration in the future.

Got it, thanks for the reply!
