I noticed that almost all of the featured articles aren’t originally {{fac}}s. This left me wondering about what the purpose of the {{fac}} tag is. I think that featured articles should be mostly chosen from candidates, or else the tag is useless. Are that current {{fac}}s not good enough? If so, maybe they should be improved. However, many of them do have fairly good comments. What do you think?

Please post your thoughts below.

We don’t actually get that many FACs normally - we feature three articles a day per month, and normally don’t have enough FACs to cover that. FACs might also not be chosen for a variety of reasons, like if they don’t meet our quality standards or are missing citations, if they’re not relevant to a large portion of our readers, or if the topic is controversial. I’m sure Jayne or staff could touch on more reasons that I’m not aware of.

@Galactic-Radiance I know that some fac’s don’t meet quality standards, but there are some that i believe do. Also, on the discussion pages on multiple candidates, there are a lot of comments saying that the article is good, not only the person who put the tag on it. Most of the articles have very high ratings. Of course, i don’t know much about fa’s, but I believe that most of the articles do meet standards, and that you should review them again.

I’m not the one who picks them - that would be Jayne and, last I checked, Allyson. I just do the tagging:slight_smile:

@WikiaWang @Galatic-Radiance True. Many do meet the standards, but for some reason, none of them actually get chosen.

I think they should take a look at all the fac’s again because some might have some major improvements. Most fac’s, have references, tips, warnings, and well-organized steps.

Well, you definitely do a hard job! :)

Very true! I second this thought.

Thanks @HappyWiki for asking for further clarification about this. I’d definitely love to see the fac tag get used more! Community input is a help but definitely not enough to sustain our needed articles each month, as @Galactic-Radiance helped explain :)

The homepage is where we get to give our first impression to new readers and feature some of our great community articles, so I’d love to see more that can be featured!

To help clarify on the 13 articles that are on the current list; featured articles are generally selected and uploaded for the month ahead, not on a day-to-day basis. We’ve also had special criteria for our featured articles for April due to Coronavirus, so those that have been nominated in March & April (9 of the 13 on the fac list) have not been reviewed for selection yet. 2 are about Valentine’s, but were not nominated until February, so unfortunately they were too late for the Feb selection. That leaves two other articles that are older that may just not have found the right time to feature yet.

So, please know that it’s not that they don’t meet the standards or that they’ve been turned down, but that most are very new nominations that we’ll look forward to adding soon :)

@JayneG got it! Actually, my point is that most of the articles made featured weren’t actually facs. I meant they the amount of fac turned fa should be greater. What do you think?

@JayneG Wow, I didn’t know that selecting FA’s were so complex. For those that have been selected in March and April will probably be reviewed in May or late April, I’m guessing?

@HappyWiki sure, that would be great to have more fac turned fa! The number of articles nominated as fac each month tend to be quite low, so to see a higher number we’d need to have more nominations. I see nominations have started to pick up with the 6 so far this month, so that’s a great start! @WikiaWang yes that sounds about right:slight_smile:

@JayneG Thanks! So when the FACs are reviewed in May, then they’ll probably (if the article gets chosen) become an FA in June?

@JayneG , yes, that is what is what I’m suggesting.

@JayneG Is the May/June topic still on the COVID 19? I was wondering if FACs related with the coronavirus could still be featured.

@WikiaWang yes:slight_smile:I did see the new ones on that list, so all good :)

Great!
