It’s January 15th, 2017 - wikiHow’s 12th birthday.  On this day 12 years ago, we went live with a ludicrously audacious plan to give everyone on the planet a free how-to manual. It seemed crazy at the time. It actually still does. Yet 12 years later, this audacious goal is is shared by more people and is closer to reality than it’s ever been.

Not too long after launch, something wonderful happened: Incredible people started joining wikiHow and offering to help. Amazing people like @Davecrosby , @Zack , @Flickety and @Loiswade42 joined. People who, even in those early days, believed in our mission to provide a free, practical how-to education to people all around the world. People who believed in the power of the wiki and the heights we could reach through collaboration . People who embraced contributing and editing, each for their own reasons . Over the years, many other awesome community members have caught the wiki bug. If I start trying to list you all, I’m going to end up losing my train of thought, but I hope you know who you are. Whether you’ve been around years or just joined in 2016, whether you’ve been to many meet-ups or just connected with us online, whether you’ve made thousands of edits or just signed up today…. You’re a wikiHowian, and I hope you know it.

We all share one mission - a lofty, long-term one that’ll take many more years. But despite this shared goal, one of the things that has always stood out to me is what a diverse community we are. I was struck by this again when I looked around the room at our Portland meetup this year. We have diverse backgrounds, diverse ages, diverse interests, diverse ways of participating on the wiki, and diverse reasons for being part of this community. I really value that, and I’m grateful for it. I think it makes us a better resource for our diverse readers, and I think we grow stronger every day because of it.

Over the years, wikiHow has grown in many ways: most obviously, in community members and diversity, in pages, and in the number of features we offer. But we’ve also grown in the sense of maturing. Our standards are higher than ever before, and therefore our advice is stronger than ever before. Our best articles combine the knowledge of dozens or even hundreds of people, from the original authors, to the bold editors, to the boosters and patrollers, to the expert reviewers and community quality testers, to the wikiGnomes, to the folks both on staff and in the community who add their artwork to our pages. What’s the outcome of all that collaboration? Readers who are better helped than ever before. That progress is something I am so proud of, and you should be, too.

How have you felt wikiHow’s impact on readers this year? If anyone wants to share their favorite example from 2016, please do… and most importantly, remember the impact you had in making it possible!

Wow, it’s hard to imagine that wikiHow has been around for 12 years already! I haven’t been around for the entirety of this project, but I have seen so much forward progress that it makes me really excited to see what the future has in store for wikiHow.

I think some of my favorite experiences with wikiHow include hosting a meetup in London where I got to meet several community members from that area of the world. I also enjoyed spending some time in the wikiHaus with @JackHerrick , Krystle, Thom, and several other truly amazing people on staff.

But the best part is, without a doubt, being able to interact with such a diverse group of people as we all work together to make the world’s how-to manual. :)

Happy 12th birthday, wikiHow!

Crazily enough, it feels like we’ve been around much longer than that, yet I honestly feel the community vibe and collaborative spirit remain just as refreshing as they were the day I first discovered this site. And the diversity factor which Jack mentioned is definitely one of our most special “ingredients” for how we got here, too.

wikiHow’s impact on readers truly is palpable and I believe we’re going to only get better!

The ultimate wikiBirthday!

On a personal level, the impact wikiHow and this community has on me every day is pretty indescribable. 2016 marked another year of connecting with awesome people from all walks of life on the wiki, and I’m super grateful for that. Hear, hear to @JackHerrick @Eric and @Jordan on diversity and collaboration as the special ingredients!

When it comes to your question about our impact on readers, I’ve seen tons of neat messages, fan mail, helpfulness testimonials, and tweets this last year… Sometimes I save them on electronic sticky notes on my desktop for a while, for personal reflection/re-reading - and it seems like a good time to share a few of my current favs from 2016:

  • “I have been beating myself up, not feeling accepted, feeling uneasy about who I am all my life. I’ve tried many things but always thought I was doomed or that there was something wrong with me. Reading this helped me to better understand myself. Thank u” - reader feedback on https://www.wikihow.com/Overcome-Emotional-Sensitivity

  • The most recent case we know of where someone used wikiHow to help deliver a baby in an emergency:  https://twitter.com/muminuh/status/815872525230018561 - which merited the updating of our About page to mention 4, not 3, babies being born using wikiHow:wink:

  • This might be one of my favorite bits from the year, though, found off wikiHow itself on a tumblr :

Those are only a few highlights, of course, but I’ve seen so many neat stories of our impact out there, perhaps this year more than ever before. Def proud to be part of that, and grateful for another year working alongside all of you on this mission!

Happy birthday, wikiHow, and here’s to a great 13th year ahead!

@ JackHerrick   wikiHow has transformed my life  and I could not imagine my life without the opportunity to be able to contribute to such a wonderful ‘‘audacious goal’’ as you put it Jack ;)  Everyone I’ve been so lucky to meet in Portland at the last wikiHow Meet Up and of course all the other hundreds of wonderful volunteers I’ve been lucky enough to get to know over the past 2 years.

Everyone is so committed to helping you to achieve the goal of creating the best in the world ‘’‘how-to’’’ manual and it is the best ‘’‘how-to’’’ manual available.  I use it all the time to help me and what is so great about it is that the articles are backed up by experts.

Oh, my son says ‘hi’ if you remember what I said to you in Portland about the worries he had ;p

Happy Birthday wikihow. Everybody is so friendly and understanding and always ready to lend a helping hand.

Happy 12th:slight_smile:I am so thankful. I have no words that can describe my thanks enough, 4 years here and I become practically speechless. But let me share a bit of my story that only encapsulates part of it.

When I first started, I was only maturing and so much different than I am now. But wikiHow has constantly helped me to grow up and make friends, having them from all over the world. And some new promising friendships that are very likely when I meet the people in person, when I find out who they really are. This site has enhanced my passion, sense of belonging and ultimately my sense of purpose.

Shout out to @JackHerrick @Anna @Krystle @Galactic-Radiance @Rewan-Hussein @Ginny-K @Mohil-Khare @Flickety @ItsHelen @SarahB @Rahul-Prabhu @WikihowSaver and so many others for the positive influences you’ve made on my life. I hope to see you all soon at a meetup and to see more wonderful promising friendships that extend beyond the wiki.

!2 years - How wonderful.

I can’t explain how much wikiHow has influenced me in the short two or so months that I’ve been part of this amazing community. I’ve always been bullied/tormented because of how much I’ve wanted to make a positive impact on the world (or at least leave a positive legacy). Normally, there is just too much of it, and I just end up leaving, but with wikiHow, I know that what I’m doing has, does and will be (hopefully) a positive impact on millions of people.

I’ve always struggled with social interactions in stressful environments, and I feel that because on wikiHow the ideology of good faith is so substantial that it’s taken an impact on how I handle situations in the real world. I’ve started to always assume the best in everyone.

Thank you, @Anna @JackHerrick @Galactic-Radiance @WikihowSaver @SarahB @Joel.Miles925 for everything.

(Omg I’m in tears thinking of my past. Seriously, thank you.)

Happy birthday wikiHow! It’s been awesome being able to help so many people out while working in such an awesome community!

Happy wikiBirthday, wikiHow! I have no doubt I’ll around for years to come.

Twelve years! That’s a long time, @JackHerrick , and having taken part in this project for a little more than eight out of the twelve years that wikiHow has been around, you deserve to be proud of the fostering of not just an instructive how-to manual that has made leaps and bounds since, but also of a community that is genuine and kind to everyone within.

I just wanna give a shoutout to the people who have been especially helpful to me on this long journey. @Ttrimm , @Bobbyfrank , @1guitarhero2 , and @Krystle welcomed me to the community when I just started here - praised when I did something right, scolded when I didn’t - like most of us, I was just learning how wikiHow works. I’ve had more than a couple of breaks since then, but whenever I did come back, Bob would be the first one to welcome me back each time, even if I would only be here for a couple days or so.

And recently on this account, @Anna , @Adelaide , and @Alabaster , and many others, have been wonderful people to work with, whether it is the serious talk, that may or may not include spamming my talk page:wink:or just the simple greeting. It all makes a difference!

Each of us should feel great about what we’ve accomplished in these years. Best wishes for an even better future!

I especially like what ItsPugle referred to above: wikiHow’s “ideology of good faith.” I think that says it all. Congratulations, Jack. You may be rightfully proud of what you started here and of what so many people of good faith have contributed to. Happy birthday, everyone!

Happy Birthday WikiHow!!!

Thank you for letting me be a part of this great website, by keeping my articles published etc.

Wowee, 12 years, and still going strong. Pretty soon this site is going to be a teenager, just one year to go!:stuck_out_tongue:

Kidding aside, this website has proven to be incredibly valuable, and a wonderful source of information, if not a place for me to actually contribute my knowledge and experience in a way that educates others. The more I expand my knowledge base, the more I can contribute, making new articles or improving ones that already exist.

Biggest and most favourite impact of 2016? Most of the impact that I’ve received would be unknown to me, though I did get kudos on how the [[Inject Cattle]] article had helped a student with class theory and potentially knowing how to perform the injections themselves when they decide to go work for a farmer. I say that’s pretty good.

So I have to give myself a pat on the back for a job well done. But enough of the self-congratulatories, I also need to give thanks to many of those who helped me a better wikiHow contributor, like @Krystle , @Anna , @JackHerrick , @GalacticRadiance , @Ttrimm , @Adelaide , and so many others.

Thanks, too, for the thousands of other contributors on here that have created so many helpful articles for so many people. I thought it was pretty awesome that a wikiHow article helped bring a new life into the world, such wonderful news!

Keep calm and keep wikiHowing on!  (We need to make a T-shirt with that… Now there’s an idea @JackHerrick …)

Wow.  Love the stories.  It’s amazing how this wikiHow continues to have such a big impact.  So humble and awed to have gotten to be part of it!

Thank you for sharing all of your experiences! Just catching up on this thread, thought I’d share this cute little story of impact I came across on Twitter today (pictures included) - https://twitter.com/MRTCatholic/status/821424800275066881 . So heartwarming to come across the everyday ways in which wikiHow is used in schools and homes around the world. Seeing posts like this and seeing how it comes full circle starting from the community is one of my favorite parts of being involved with this project. Happy birthday, wikiHow!

Happy 12th birthday, wikiHow!

Happy birthday !!!

Thank you all for one more year of empowering and inspiring millions.

Happy 12th birthday, wikiHow.:slight_smile:Does this mean that wikiHow needs to fill out the COPPA form? It’s not 13 yet.

I think our wikiHowians would probably be surprised to know how many lives it’s saved or helped to change for the better, or both. Such a small, yet impressive goal - to give others a free how-to manual - has bloomed into, well, wikiHow. And I think that’s really wonderful.

Happy birthday wikiHow!!!
