I’m working on How to Take Action to Stop Period Shaming , and I would love to be able to get this article to FA status as I feel like this is a really important thing that needs to be addressed. Anyone wanna help? Currently I need help with:

  • Intro
  • How to educate people about menstruation
  • Need a few more reliable sources
  • A few helpful points that I probably will forget to add
  • And pictures.
Of course, you can add anything that you feel is helpful and an improvement. So, just saying thanks ahead of time, and looking forward to your edits!

It looks like a topic that has a lot of potential. I did a quick Google search and found a good number of pages which could be helpful sources:

These are a few which I found which may have something useful. Of course, these were just some of the top results on Google, I have no doubt that there are more.

I am also reminded of an article I started - How to Help Fight Period Poverty . It got a rising star, so you may find inspiration in there.

Also, some general points I thought about:

  • Period shaming doesn’t just happened in Europe/North America. It happens around the world and can look different in different countries. I think it would be helpful to bring awareness to period shaming everywhere.
  • Trans and gender non-confirming people also face period stigma. This experience could also be different, especially based on the fact that they then have to face two different types of stigma (periods and being trans/GNC).
  • Religion can also play a role in period shaming. That’s not to say it’s an inherent part of any religion, but some people can use religion as a way to justify period shaming. It would be interesting to have advice regarding how to break the stigma among certain religions.
  • Different people have different roles in breaking period stigma. People who menstruate, people who don’t, parents, teachers, businesses, communities, politicians and religious services to name a few.
  • Period shaming is a large-scale issue. It would be cool to have steps on, for example, making political change, such as speaking to your local MP/senator or whoever else has influence. There are laws in many countries which further stigmatise menstruation (many countries don’t see pads and tampons as an essential product, so VAT is added when you buy them; on the other hand, my country - Scotland - made history a few years ago by being the first country in the world to provide free menstrual products, which is a step in the right direction).
  • Medical discrimination is also a big issue. Many people go to the doctor’s for a legitimate health related issue only to get dismissed by their doctors (usually cis male doctors, but that’s not to say it’s all of them or it’s only them) by it “just being their period”. This can be true for physical and mental health issues.
  • It’s not just the bleeding which is stigmatised, it is also other parts of menstruation, such as PMS and cramps.

I hope this helps. It seems to be off to a great start and I would love to see it flourish.

Yes, this is why I wrote people (mostly girls) on part 1, step 3. Although, I feel like the wording could be improved though, as it sounds a bit off for some reason?

I also wrote that in some religions, people with more traditional views see people on their periods as “unpure”, But I’m not sure how to write more about that without it coming across as offensive.

I’m not really sure how I could write about this, it’s a pretty big thing to write about and my younger teenager mind just does not know how to write about this in a way that does not mention politics (which most people could get offended by)

Again, I don’t want to make this too political (Even if period shaming is a thing that can get political), Buuuuut I feel like I’m just scared that people won’t like my article or something.

I didn’t know this! I’ll make sure to do more research on this (Even though I can’t find many good sources in China, where basically every good site is censored :-/)

Thank you so much Ruby! I’ll make sure to try and get this article promoted, and eventually featured so that more people can see it! (Pretty big goal lol)

Thanks for your response. My suggestons weren’t based off anything I saw on the article, just random things which came to my mind. It’s a shame that so many sources are blocked in your country, but I do think that having sources can help (if you can’t access them, then I’m sure someone else might be able to). I don’t see any issues with the article so far, but of course, it’s still in use, which is why I was just bringing up certain things that could be mentioned. Hopefully others might chime in to help too.

Also, in terms of politics, you don’t have to be specific, it can be something as simple as “Convince your local MP to take action”.

I worked on it a bit, and tried to add some of your tips to my article. Can someone maybe check this over, and give me some criticism?
