I want to get a progress update for the category tree, because category requests have been on hold for almost five years. I know this is a big project, but it seems a bit odd that almost no new categories have been created.
I do have a few questions to ask.
- There are dozens of unused categories after depopulation that have not been deleted yet. Unused categories - wikiHow
I wonder if these categories will be deleted soon.
- I want to discuss what could be future guidelines for category creation. I think ideally a category should group large numbers of related topics together, rather than small numbers of similar topics. Maybe a consensus based process can help with the assessment of this, like this subforum.
- The hold seems to be inching closer to getting lifted, but very slow. When will the hold finally be over? It has been going on for a long time, with almost no visible progress.

The simple answer here is that we’re not creating new categories
Google has something tiny like 14 categories that they use, so we’re not looking to expand our thousands of categories! We did a large-scale project where we removed categories with less than 12 articles in them last year, and may need to do another of those in the future, but it’s not a priority at this stage.
I’ll let you know if there’s a way we could create a Community project out of this moving forward - it’s just not likely at the moment.

So no more creating new categories?
How about some of the older categories, like Internet Explorer - how to articles from wikiHow
, that likely won’t see any new prospect because this is a discontinued product?

You won’t see any changes at the moment. If we think there could be a good community project for these historical-type categories, I’ll keep you posted!
