Hi all! This week Zygomatt and R2_d2000 brought up the change of branding for Twitter to X and the changes that may be needed around wikiHow. I checked in with the content team and have an update and project for us! Here are the deets:
URLs/Titles/Q&A:For now, we will leave titles/URLs and Q&A of existing articles as they are. This is primarily because Google searches are still using “Twitter” rather than “X”. Over time, this may change, so we will look at updating titles then. We don’t have a plan for Q&A at this stage, but it’s on the team’s radar (thanks R2!)
wikiText:
We do want to change the wikiText.
On the first reference to Twitter in an article, we want to refer to it as X, formerly known as Twitter. Other possible phrasing is something like “… the X platform, formerly known as Twitter”. On later mentions of Twitter within an article, it should just be called X, or the X platformdepending on what fits best.
Sometimes you might want to use your judgment to use a combination, like Twitter/X- this might work for section headings or elsewhere that it feels appropriate.
Please remember we are not
changing URLs, so we want to keep any internal or external links that use the word “Twitter” as-is or the link will break! We also need to keep the images as-is, so please don’t change the word “Twitter” in images! This means it’s not a good idea to use find & replace, but the “Find” function can be helpful to highlight all cases of the word “Twitter” within the article that you can then go through.
The term tweet is ok so we can keep that, it’s just the platform name itself that we’re looking to update.
I’ve pulled all of the articles in the Twitter category so we can start with these. If you find others that aren’t in the category but talk about Twitter, it’s totally fine to update them to match this text as well.
If you’d like to help with this project here are the steps:
- Open the spreadsheet HERE
, starting with the “Live Articles” tab. These are in order from most to least popular, so ideally we want to work our way from the top down.
- Write your username in Column B next to the articles that you’re going to update.
You can do as many as you like, but please only claim up to 10 at a time.
- Edit the article to update mentions of “Twitter”. The first time it’s mentioned, change it to X, formerly known as Twitter. For mentions after that, use X, or the X platform.
Please be careful not to change any links to URLs or Images!
- Add a summary like “Twitter > X” or “Updating new platform name” and publish the change.
- Mark as complete by adding a checkmark in the spreadsheet in Column C.
If you come across one that doesn’t need an update or anything else to mention, you can add a note in Column D.
