When will category requests be taken off of hold?

I’m afraid there isn’t a set timeline for this, since there’s still a lot of work to be done to determine the ideal category depth, as described here

When those results are found and the consequent project actions are eventually wrapped up (for example, any changing or simplifying of the category tree in some areas, if it’s warranted), it’s relatively likely that category requests will only go forward in a much rarer way. We already have thousands upon thousands of categories that cover most areas, so it’s most likely that new categories will only be added if there are a really significant number of articles that fit within that topic (for example, maybe some big new tech app/platform will show up that merits its own new category area because we end up with dozens or even hundreds of articles on it, but we wouldn’t necessarily need more focused niche subcategories within existing broad areas or for areas with only a few articles). I don’t want to throw another wall of text at ya, so see that thread I linked to above for more info on why:slight_smile:

For now, I think it’s safest to consider requests on hold for the relatively long haul - for the most part, we have the broad categories we need to keep the wiki rolling, and all pages are still accessible from search, of course. If or when we do reopen requests, Jayne or Chris or Flickety or someone else working in this area will keep you posted on how things have evolved and what the new MO is!

@JayneG has anything changed in the past few months?

@Awesome-Aasim , there is no update as such on this, requests are still on hold. However, I believe there’s currently some data analysis happening to determine the best way forward for categories. So although it hasn’t been forgotten, the status just hasn’t changed as of yet.
