Been dabbling in Time Zone UIBs when I recently got asked a question I can’t answer about them.
From looking over the master list of Time Zone abbreviations (located here
), there are some time zones which contain the same abbreviation yet exist in different countries spread far apart on different continents.
For general, after Template:User-, we generally use the complete abbreviation. However, if there duplicates in this form, how could we handle additionals without numbering them? I’m right now suspecting we could try adding the abbreviation plus a space and the country it exists in, but even then that could be troublesome in case it spreads to other countries.
Could there be some way of specifying the UTC offset in the title? I’m sure specifying the country/region is the most ideal route, but it’s the only thing that comes to mind as an alternative.
So maybe like IST (Indian Standard Time could be standard) while IST +1 could be (Irish Standard Time)? Is that what you’re saying, or are you saying IST versus ISTp1 (like the image ID would say?
I meant that, if you want to stick to using the ‘IST’ abbreviation, Indian Standard Time could become {{User IST UTC+0530}} and Irish Standard Time {{User IST UTC+01}}. It’s clumsy and probably not a route to pursue — must be alternatives e.g. by just writing the full names out.

We could also consider
- {{User IndianST}} and {{User IrishST}}
- {{User IndianStandardTime}} and {{User IrishStandardTime}}
Also a bit awkward, but definitely simpler in my opinion!

When I originally thought about this issue, I was originally thinking something along the lines of “User IST India” and “User IST Ireland”, but thats only thoughts right now and only should be used in these off-cases.
