Is this legal?? http://www.wikihow.com/Unblock-Copyright-Infringement-on-Youtube

To me it looked like the person was trying to remove the copyright from videos and if that is the case the it isn’t legal… but it could also be they are trying to bend the copyright rules of youtube itself which also is not legal. It is a tricky question. It should be edited to where there is no way it could be thought of as an illegal process.

Thank you for clarifying that Metsguy234. I just had come across it and I was just recommending that it be edited to where it doesn’t sound illegal. I understand your point though, but why not edit this article to wear there is no doubt that this article is indeed legal. That way newcomers don’t get the idea that WikiHow gives instructions to do illegal things… Just a small suggestion.

This is hazy…it’s legal if the video is actually qualifies as fair use, so the article should definitely give the reader some pointers on that. As for whether it qualifies as fair use…that’s probably beyond the scope of that particular article. We can let YouTube decide the legality of that, ultimately.

Um…no? Well, I won’t come back here (to this thread, at least) on purpose, but I’m curious why you think wH is not in an ideal position to be just that-I’d call it an imperative?

Ya, just immoral things (whew!) you guys are surely convinced by now that I’m some kind of zealot or something, lol, stuck on this rant; tho I’m really not.

Well, it doesn’t strike you that this turns morality into a menu choice, from an assumed cornerstone? (a rhetorical Q) And I would say miss manners might have more to do with NVC than morality. (completely disregarding the thread title, sorry T)

But I have what will surely be an uncomfortable example for you, all warmed up… I’d like to suggest that you might sleep on any defense of your pathetic attempt to reduce morality to manners.

Please stay civil.

Would we contact YouTube, or…?

Yes, well, but isn’t it a bit late for that? Civility assumes morality, ha, that’s even famous, some kind of cliche’. So, once again, I’m somehow the bad guy here.

I just edited Unblock Copyright Infringement on YouTube and corrected this issue. See it if it needs some more thing then we have to make a research for more.

No…perhaps not the bad guy… but you do tend to state your opinions in a way that puts others down. For example of what I mean… in your last post you stated: “I’d like to suggest that you might sleep on any defense of your pathetic attempt to reduce morality to manners.” That phrase presupposes that your conversation partner(s) aren’t mentally competent. It puts them down in such a way that they no longer wish to engage in the conversation. It’s best (and more civil) to simply state facts… and leave the judgement calls about other people out. That way, we can benefit from everyone’s input, not just yours.

Yes, good point, and ty; I was offended, and put down–which is no excuse.

I would think so. Legal loopholes may be shady, but by their nature they are legal.

The article is using a legal loophole in an attempt to remove the copyright claim. Claiming the posting of a video as fair use is not illegal. It may be “stretching the truth” in some cases, but wikiHow is not in a position to be a moral paragon in my opinion.

Essentially, what the article is saying is that if your YouTube video was flagged for copyright infringement, you can write to YouTube and claim it as fair use under copyright law. This would probably have a very good chance of working except in the most extreme cases (i.e., someone puts up the entirety of a movie or something like that) and ultimately is within the law.

Because we’re an Internet how-to guide, not Miss Manners. People don’t come to wikiHow for moralizing (unless they’re looking for the How To Be A Moral Person article or something like that).
