@Pirelot , Because there are enough articles for each of these topics to make these subcategories. That’s why.

Could work

I support this. I’m thinking articles within the Judaism category proper should probably be centric to specifically the religion itself (like conversion, general customs, etc.) whereas more specific topics such as the examples above could really merit their own distinct subcategories. This makes more sense from a structure standpoint.

I may be wrong, but it seems that there is plenty of room for categorizers to get confused as to which category best fits some of the articles. This might make it difficult and discouraging for well-intentioned wikiHowians to categorize certain of the articles on Judaism. In particular, I would think that http://www.wikihow.com/Behave-in-an-Orthodox-Synagogue would better fit in the Orthodox Judaism category than where Carolyn suggests it be put (under Synagogues), but I am have little experience with categorizing or with Judaism. Of course, one of you experts ( @Jordan or @Carolyn-Barratt ) could always step in a straighten out the categories. In a larger sense, I wonder what is gained in the way of making articles easier to find or in increasing readership.

The entire concept of the category tree is to make articles, not just easier to find, but also the best suited category name for the subject. The more sub-categories there are in one section (the deeper it gets), obviously gets harder to find those articles, and thus in some cases, it would be probably faster to use the search bar/Google search rather than the intended category finding. A bonus if it’s also a name suggestion that would be friendly to not only readers (to find) but to editors whom are adding categories to it. Just because it has “Synagogue” in the title might not necessarily mean it should be in the Synagogue category (this is a pure example, no intentions for offense).

What about a subcategory for Jewish traditions? This subcat could include gatherings, rituals, etc. and gain subcategories as needed over time. (For example, I see 5 wedding articles.) The 2 current Judaism subcategories might go under a Jewish Traditions subcategory. I am not Jewish, so I may be getting this wrong. @Alabaster , “Behave in an Orthodox Synagogue” could belong to both “Orthodox Judaism” subcategory & “Synagogue” subcategory.

This is a good point @Maluniu . I can see the need for discretion about category placement, with taking the specific article title into consideration. I guess the overall goal would be to have a balance: structure the articles in a concise way so they can be easily found, but still keeping topics relatively distinct. On a side note, how are the Christianity, Islam, etc. categories currently structured? (Out of curiosity for how we may already be handling this).

I looked at the religion category, where you can see subcategories listed clearly. http://www.wikihow.com/Category:Religion Common subcategory themes include… * Holy days (individual days, e.g. “Christmas” and “Easter” are subcategories of this category) * Religious book (Bible, Qur’an) * Prayers (Muslim Prayer) * Dress/lifestyle * Sects (Wicca, Paganism) * Religion-specific customs (e.g. Buddhist meditation, Christian schooling, Feng Shui) So it looks my “traditions” category suggestion might be a little broad. What do you all think?

@Jordan @Carolyn-Barratt Was/Is there an agreement of the proposed category and/or the selected articles? Between the conversation, I didn’t want to move forward with the original post before an actual confirmation. Thanks:slight_smile:

Yes, I think we have an agreement. I think the “Orthodox Synagogue” article could work in both the ‘Orthodox Judaism’ & the ‘Synagogue’ subcategories, since we can have articles in up to 2 categories.
