Just a random question because sometimes I see new contributors say “hi” on other peoples talk page.

If someone’s just saying “hi” once, I usually patrol it - the message is harmless and isn’t vandalism or abuse, as the new patroller templates state. If they keep saying hi a bunch of times in a row, revert it and give them the chat template.

Well it’s always been my understanding that reverts on talk pages should only done for promotional spam, super offensive comments, and personal info/underage reveals. Everything else, including the “hi, I’m bored, wanna be friends” chatter, is fair game to be marked as patrolled. If it continues then give them a {{chat}}. I would kinda advise against too many reverts on talk pages in the first place, since the way it gives an incorrect new message notification can be confusing at times. You can let the owner of the talk page decide what they wanna do with their messages.

Yes, I usually mark it as patrolled but sometimes people revert those messages on my talk page so I was just wondering. Thanks!

I tend to agree with @Zygomatt
, although there are always exceptions… but I think it’s a good general rule! And I agree that rollbacks tend to be really confusing for newer users.

Hmm…okay. I normally patrol it (although sometimes I do revert when it is said to the same user multiple times), but if it is constant, I leave a {{chat}} template.
I am kinda stumped on that- The reason why I would patrol is because well, it’s just a simple hi. but the reason I wouldn’t patrol it is because it doesn’t have much grammar or anything. Because wiki-how wants to be shown as professional and someone saying hi doesn’t look that professional.
