The launch of the Welcome Wagon feature came out a few weeks ago, and some users who pass a simple test are allowed to be on it. Users of the feature are expected to leave positive, personalized messages for new contributors as they join the community. Also, since Welcomers might need a little know-how to answer new contributors’ questions, I thought about Welcome Wagon users being on the WelcomeBot, too. What are your opinions on this?

They should always be separated – the entire point of the Welcome Wagon tool is to leave an encouraging message for the editor, concerning their first (and thereafter) edits in a personalmanner or tone. The WelcomeBot is simply “there” to automatically welcomethe said editor; when the booster or admin is actively editing at that time. Also, because the fact that anyone can take the Welcome Wagon test without requirements as such, boosters and admins do have a more knowledgeable aspect of the site and could direct the new editor more efficiently rather than an editor that just knows the “basics” of it.

Hey! I also want to add to this, that a Welcome Wagon user might not have the know-how that an Admin or Booster has to be on the WelcomeBot:wink:

If you look at the research and stats leading to the development of the Welcome Wagon, you’ll find that new editors are more likely to stay and make productive edits when being welcomed by a WW user than WelcomeBot due to the personalization of the messages. Also, because the WelcomeBot uses the booster/admin who last edited, there could be situations (usually occurring at non-peak hours) where that person would log off and there wouldn’t be another booster/admin editing for hours (or could be preoccupied with a task). It can be discouraging to a new editor if no one is available to answer their questions. So, having the WW attached to WelcomeBot would be sort of contradictory to its purpose.

I agree with everything above. I believe they should remain separate.

I agree with everyone else…Thanks for the clarification! (If I could, I would do some research on this subject). Is this thread appropriate for closure?
