Hey everybody, I have a suggestion. We must have an icon on the top of our user page showing whether we are online or offline. For ex: I have a question. i ask it to XXX. The XXX will only login tomorrow. So, I must be waiting for the answer the whole day.Instead if we have this option, I can ask the same question to YYY if he is online. This will be lot easier. I hope you can understand my suggestion. Please post your thoughts.

I deleted the duplicate threads.:slight_smile:That idea actually came up a while back. We discussed it in this thread , if you want to take a look at it. Back then we decided that it wasn’t really a necessary feature, but maybe people’s opinions have changed since then. Personally, I have pretty much the same opinion. I don’t mind it, as long as it has an opt-in/opt-out feature. Even if I’m online, I might be doing a bold edit on an NFD and not see their message for 45 minutes, which could lead to some people thinking that I’m trying to ignore them since the widget is showing that I’m online.

Thanks for deleting duplicate threads! your opinion is write and I took a look at the link but still let’s see what many people tell.

Yup, for sure! If the majority of people support it now, I can live with this feature.

“We must”? If, and only if, there is an option for opting-out, I’d agree with this. But not “we must”.

I think we debated this once… June Days NVM…Pink Star gave a link. (= EDIT: I really liked this idea then, too. I think, like what Shinako said, if you ask a question to someone, but not sure when the last time they edited was, you could get a reply a long way off. And, it’s handy, if the question is urgent, or something. Also, a lot of regular users don’t know how to use the logs, or “Contributions” to see the last time a person edited was. I do think an “opt-out” button is called for though. I’m on another site where it shows which users are online and off…And it’s kinda creepy…

I agree with everyone above, and I think this is a nice idea if there will be an opt in or out feature. Usually when I have a question, I look in the recent changes box and I ask a user who is active for help. However It would be good to have a feature to show if someone is online/offline!

I actually disagree with this idea. It just seems too “social network-y” like Facebook or MSN. And we all share the frustration when users treat the site as if it is. For urgent assistance, we have the recent changes, admin notice board, and even IRC. However, agreeing with everyone else, if there is an option to opt in/out, I could live with it.

I also don’t see why it is necessary. It is of no consequence to me whether someone is online or not, and it should not be of consequence to anyone else whether I am. If someone needs help quickly, we have plenty of ways of communicating (forums, IRC, admin noticeboard, help desk, etc).
