I have been previously notified (well, I guess I notified myself) that a quotation mark (") will break the link of an article, and I believe I have found a solution. I’ll first like to give an explanation:
I first started an article on Help a Family Member with Alzheimer’s During the Coronavirus Outbreak
. When I tried to link it on people’s talk page, however, it would turn out red sometimes. I figured it’s because the apostrophe isn’t a real mark on a URL, instead it’s %27. However, by typing %27, it will still show an apostrophe, or single quotation mark.
Solution:
We can replace a (") with a single quotation mark (’), and it will work just fine. Example:
Make a “No Sew” Face Mask
will sometimes link to Make a
, so we can change the title to Make a ‘New Sew’ Face Mask
and it will most likely work.
Note: If you would want to link an article on someone’s talk page with an single quotation, be sure to replace ’ with %27.
I believe this will work, but I’m not 100% sure.
Firstly, I’d like to notify you that your proposed title change has a error concerning the ‘new’.
Also, I think it’s a good idea as long as it doesn’t get confusing. Apostrophes aren’t usually used for quotations, so it might confuse readers.
@FlowerPower555
I know, but I think it’s the only way. I figured that it’s possible to manipulate an apostrophe to a straight vertical line, similar to a single quotation mark.
I agree with FP. I think it would be better to get the apostrophe issue fixed rather than changing it all. In all honesty, I don’t like the way the apostrophes look (but that might just be me being petty), and I’m not sure that makes grammatical sense. Also, that would require a lot of title changes and a change in the title policy. Also, new users probably wouldn’t know about this and it would be a hard thing to explain. I thought the quotation mark thing was getting fixed.
@RubyRoseRain
I thought so too, until today I realized that the link was still broken.
But it’s probably still filed and being looked into?
I think the issue is that wikiHow does not “escape” quotes (i.e. use " instead of ") when parsing the Activity Feed, so basically what happens is that it cuts off at a quotation mark. If @JayneG
can get this issue fixed ASAP it would be wonderful.

If this bug has already been reported, there’s probably not much to do other than wait for a fix?
It would be great if minor problems like this could have super quick fixes, but the engineering team needs to prioritize with mission-focused items taking priority. This is a low importance/impact issue, although if the issue has been logged and reported then it will get fixed in due time. :)

This is indeed filed, so I echo @Eric
’s sentiments here - because it’s low priority it’s just something that we need to be patient with.
Thanks for looking into a solution @WikiaWang
, but at this stage it’s just something to wait on.
