In my first couple weeks on WikiHow, I’ve thought of a few features that could greatly improve the site.
-
Request deletion. It would make the request pages a lot more concise and easy to navigate. It would also be helpful to weed out clear NFD material. I think it would be best to have specific people assigned to this job so that no vandals could get through. Request admins, I guess?
-
You could write a short explanation as to why you approved/disapproved a photo or tip in the guardian functions. This would help new people get a feeling for what photos/tips are acceptable and what aren’t: you can give guidelines, but some people learn best through direct experience.
-
Photo editing. Some photos are good, but too dark, too zoomed-out, etc. I guess you could do this yourself if you’re working on a computer, but it would be very convenient to have an embedded editing tool.
These are all just speculations. (The first one is something I’d really love; there’s a kind of satisfaction to see things get checked off and the community dash numbers going down.) Any thoughts are appreciated.
I liked the 3rd one, of photo editing. I may help in doing minor changes but again it could be misused and create some extra work for patrolling.
Good ideas Danielle! I think the 1st and 3rd should be put into consideration. @Anna
what do you think?

Anyone can comment on threads like this and I’m happy to pass on suggestions to the folks at the wikiHaus, but there’s no need to focus on my thoughts in particular. Everyone here has opinions on these suggestions, I’m sure, and all ideas, concerns, and opinions are welcome
@Danielle-Durning
We actually do have a page for deleting suggested topics; admins can carry out the deletions, but you can suggest them here: http://www.wikihow.com/wikiHow:Suggested-Topics-to-Delete
For Quality Guardian, I think my concern would be that this would really slow the flow of the tool down. And I’m not sure where that feedback would go? Tips are generally sent from anonymous mobile users, so they’re not likely to get be involved enough to read much feedback. For video adders, there’s a link to their name/talk page, so you can go ahead and offer them a talk page note about the video, if you want to
Photo editing would be amazing but to be honest I think it’s outside of the scope of our mission and resources right now. We have a dedicated but very small team of engineers, so we often have to prioritize our wish lists pretty intensely, and since there are offline ways to edit and re-upload images, and our main engineering focus is on improving the editing process around wikiHow, that’s probably not in the cards soon. Maybe one day though - I think it’s a really neat idea!
I think there will be lesser doubts and more self-help happening if all the wikiHow related articles be categorized (which they might be already) and clubbed under a section of say Knowledge base. And this could be a button option (or whatever is the technical term for it) in the top bar where we have the ‘Help Us’ button. This is a general suggestion for all queries related to wikiHow. Most answers are available in the articles but one needs to search them.
Vish, we do have categories for wikiHow-related articles. Here are some examples I found by searching wikiHow-related terms…
http://www.wikihow.com/Category:Article-Deletion
(I searched “nfd,” clicked the first article that came up, then clicked on its category.)
http://www.wikihow.com/Category:What-You-Can-Do-to-Help
http://www.wikihow.com/Category:New-Article-Boost
Nevertheless, these categories aren’t particularly easy to find. I think it would be useful if they were made more accessible, because I don’t think many people are aware that they exist.
True and Thanks MissLunaRose
I agree with you and feel the same…
And would say that a one click option for all wikiHow related article would be helpful.
I like
your idea a lot and I think I
might have just been inspired!
By editing pictures, do you mean annotating them? If so, try downloading a mobile, free app called Skitch. It’s quite helpful and I recommend it for quick notes on your photos!
