We all enjoy wikiHow don’t we? We all love talking with others don’t we? Why not combine those?
For those who aren’t in the Wildly Impressive Kindness Improving House of Outstanding Wow (WIKIHOW), you may not know of wikiHow’s Discord. For the past who knows long, wikiHow has been the owner of an unofficial Discord server.
This Discord server is home to many notable authors and Administrators including:
- Alex
- Nadia
- Joel
- Houdini
- Lugia2453
- Pink_Star
- Ekat
- Anna - Anna
- KommaH
- marina - Marina
- David
And who can’t forget Daniel (Otherwise known on Discord as ‘Random Restroom Filmer’ - Don’t ask).
Discord has been an amazing thing for many people; It allows us to get to know our fellow contributors away from wikiHow and truely get to experience the wikiHow community!
What I am proposing is a {{discord}} template that can be applied to talk pages as an invite to join our Discord.
I’m working on the HTML now.
This is my suggestion for the wikiHow {{discord}} tag.
I’m open to suggestions.
If anyone here knows how to use HTML, please feel free to open a pull request!

Honestly, I don’t really see a need for this template. The Discord is a chat room, not a project, and we don’t have a template used to invite people to the IRC (which was the chatroom that was used before our Discord server started). If you want to invite people to the Discord, why not just send them a personal message asking if they want to join, and if they say yes, link to the forum thread, rather than making a whole template for it? I don’t think an entire template is necessary, especially since creating a template could suddenly open up a huge avenue for trolls to join, seeing as it would most likely end up scattered among many Talk pages.
Thanks! I was looking all over the forums for that post.
What stops trolls from finding the forum post? It’s visible to anyone.Plus - It’s just a template. Hopefully it will be used, but if not, it can just be deleted.
I’ve written up all the code for it. I just want come community feedback.
I do see your point - I still think that it is important that we try to share Discord among other contributors that maybe aren’t aware of the forums or don’t check them. I know I didn’t start using/checking them until a day or so ago.
If trolls join, Admins/Flock Leaders have full control to ban, kick and purge messages etc.
Let’s just see how this goes. If it’s obvious that we are getting too many trolls, then I’ll admit defeat, but until then, I still think it’s worth a shot.
Pugle, while I understand that the server admins can ban and kick trolls and delete messages, you have to remember that just like on wikiHow, these admins are volunteers and aren’t online every second of the day. Most trolls aren’t even aware that we have a forum, and most of our users that use the forums use them for collaboration purposes, not chatting.
Please allow others to give their input on whether or not this is a necessary template - the way you worded your post makes it sound a lot like you intend to create it regardless of what others say, even though I know you don’t mean that
