I don’t know what the deal is. As often as not, I get a timed out error when trying to view my page. Both at work (IE 8 and Windows 7) and at home (Firefox version whatever it’s on now) and Windows 7. If you need a screen shot, I will get one when it happens when I get home. It’s a 503 or 503 error.

@Ttrimm - bummer! Yes a screenshot would definitely help - I’ll check in with engineers too and see if any temporary glitches or maintenance were happening. I’m able to see your page at the moment, and I had some other folks in IRC check and it worked. Hopefully it was a temporary issue, but if it’s persisting, send along a screenshot or even screencast and I’ll pass it on. Thank youuuu!

The problem is, it KEEPS happening. This has been going on for several months, I am pretty sure. Will take a screenshot the next few times it happens. There is no way to predict when it will happen.

I talked with Reuben a little more about this - he thinks it’s related to how stats are computed for the user page, probably in connection with the numbers in your boxes for wikiHow stats, articles started, and thumbs ups (and possibly the extra profile boxes). Cause, lady, you’ve got high edit numbers!:slight_smile:I’m going to file it to see if we can get something more smooth going with the stats to reduce the errors. In the meantime, you can experiment with removing some of the boxes that display – Sorry, I know that’s a bummer, though:frowning:I’ll keep you posted if we get a fix that makes this a non-issue! Fingers crossed!

not a huge deal, but i notice that clicking ‘view more’ in my ‘articles started’ pane on my userpage in Chrome if i am not signed in–as an Anon, iow–takes me to a whitescreen. this has happened on a mac, and a windows machine. Signing in seems to cure it.

This seems to happen to me even though I’m logged in.

ok, well i’ve only verified the ‘logged in’ part on the mac.

Thanks guys - I opened a bug report for that, too! It does seem to be working logged in (we’ve tested Mac and Windows), so hopefully it’s a pretty rare occurrence. Hailey, am I right in thinking you’re talking about the 503 message you reported to me? That part is an issue both logged out and logged in, but the “View more” part is what Bbyrd009 was talking about - that seems to be working okay logged in now, but just be a problem logged out. Still, it’s on the list for a fix when there’s some time in engineering - just a little lower priority, since logged out users don’t peruse user pages as much as logged in ones do:slight_smile:

If their problems are like mine, there is no predicting when there is going to be a problem.

Screenshots of the two screens I get.

I am using Firefox 26 and Windows 7

@Anna @Ttrimm Getting the same on Teresa’s user page, FF 27 and Windows 8

Yep @Maluniu and @Ttrimm , I know it’s an issue, for sure. The “logged in” vs “logged out” part of my comment was only in relation to the separate bug that Bbyrd was reporting here. I agree that there’s no way to predict the user page timeout - I’ve seen it too - and we all agree that it’s a real bummer! Sorry for the frustration and thanks for your patience. Both bugs here have been filed, and the Gnomes/Gateway Timeout is high priority on the list of fixes. They’re working on ways to make sure that stat calculations on user pages and elsewhere don’t overtax the system (to resolve the gateway/gnomes issue). It’s not an easy fix, but it is getting attention and will hopefully be resolved or at least eased soon. In the meantime, stripping stats-heavy boxes from the user page may well help, but I’m sorry; I know that it’s, for lack of a better word, lame that that’s the only solution we have until the overall speed issues are resolved in that area. We do know this is a big deal and a big pain in the meantime, especially since it’s affecting you guys as top contributors with high stats! It’s on the to-do list of our head engineer in the area of site stability, and I appreciate your bearing with us while he’s getting the speed issues figured out!

I don’t have any extras on my user page, just the list the last 100 on request. Should I disable that??

The engineers’ speculation is that the parts that run the “stats” are taxing the page load more than other pages (hence the gateway issues on user pages in particular - especially ones with impressive high stats like yours!), so {{My-NABStats}} and/or the wikiHow stat boxes from http://www.wikihow.com/Special:ProfileBox may be contributing to the problem. Again, totally understand if you don’t want to experiment with disabling them, and he’s working on a real solution that will make user page loading quicker, regardless of templates or profile boxes or stats. But if you want a band-aid until we get there, that’s the best approach to try out.

I experimented some with my own page, and it definitely seemed to be under more strain when I displayed templates like {{My-NABStats}} and {{READERSHIP}} - until we can get a fix to the speed/processing, removing those kinds of templates may ease the problem (although probably not eliminate them). But I know that takes some fun out of things, so it’s a bummer of an answer:confused:

No problem. Will try that…if I can get it to work to edit it!

You should be able to get straight to the edit link regardless: http://www.wikihow.com/index.php?title=User:Ttrimm&action=edit I’m seeing a Gateway on you now and can’t get it to go away with reloads. I’m sorry this is happening to your profile in particular, @Ttrimm ! Big bummer – I will let you know the moment any speed fixes are worked out!

I have removed any article stats for the time. I need to see the articles more than anything else.

Sweet, I hope it helps, and I’ll let you know when there are more developments with speed and number crunching!

Since removing all stats, it still hangs up. Just not as much.
