I’m going through questions on public transportation and 80% of the articles are about Uber which makes me confused as Uber is private transportation, not public. We need a new category for private transportation. (and also one for trains in answering questions)
Sorry, I’m a little confused - are you requesting a new category, or for the existing Uber category to be added to the Answer Questions tool? If it’s the former, we already have an Uber category here
; if it’s the latter, that would require tweaking to the Answer Questions tool, which would need to be considered by staff. I believe the tool deliberately doesn’t contain too many categories due to technical limitations, but I’ll ping @JayneG
and ask if anything’s changed.
Im asking why Uber is in the public transport category when it should be in private/chartered transport
I don’t believe we have a category for private transportation, and I would guess that since Uber and other ridesharing companies are so widely used, its current placement is probably fine for readers.

I’m an Uber driver myself - so I do know quite a bit about the process, and like @anon74718567
said, the placement of the Uber category is in the right place. Unlike taxis and limousines which sometimes operate off private transportation, Uber’s cars operate in the public domain - you sadly aren’t the only rider that an Uber driver is seeing. (Uber actually says not to present it as private transportation). The categories placement is 100% fine in public transportation, and is well received to find the information quickly and painlessly. Uber Drivers travel the same streets that a privatized citizen travels through public streets that anyone can use.
probably also depends on how you define public transport…is it “owned” by the public, so the state or is it just a transportatoion which is widely used and very common for the public?
Uber is not owned by any state or government. It is a big corporation and found worldwide. Although some areas abound more than others (with more Ubers in certain areas than others), Drivers are contracted by Uber and given the ability to go on at any time. There are new laws in one state saying Drivers must be classified as employees, however, that would take books to explain that most drivers don’t want to work a set schedule.
