I just automatically welcomed a new user, who then replied to me and said she’s 10. I know 10 year olds aren’t allowed on here due to COPPA, but this is the first time I’ve had to deal with this. What should I do?

Report them to the Administrator Notice Board. An admin will soon see it and block them. Or, if an admin is active, you can send them a message and they’ll deal with it. For now, I have taken care of that user. Thanks for telling about them! You can find the ANB here : http://www.wikihow.com/wikiHow:Administrator-Notice-Board

Thanks. Bookmarking that link now.

You’re welcome! EDIT : Or, you could have it in your Mylinks (if you use it) http://www.wikihow.com/Create-My-Links-on-wikiHow

There’s more. Revert the edit in which the user states their age. Remove all traces of it. Then, send them an {{age}} template. After that, report them to the admin notice board in the under 13 section. Only do this when the user specifically states their age. Grade levels and other stats don’t matter.

Why do I need to remove all traces of it?

Because it’s to comply with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act. Therefore, it is law. -Tom.

COPPA doesn’t allow websites to store any personal information of users under 13. One thing worth noting is that for anons, an {{age}} template on their talk page is enough. We don’t report nor block underage anons because since some IPs are shared, it’s impossible to know exactly who the underage person is.
