Based on a quick search, it appears that no significant or well-known “How To” site exists specifically for kids. Call me opportunistic, but to me that spells “big unserved market.” It’s also something that could really help people - when parents can’t find the right way to explain how to do something to a kid, this site will be there to help. So, would anyone be interested in working with me to do a wikiHow-branded site just for kids? Who would have to “sign off” on that, if anyone? If there is no interest, I may pursue it independently on my own.
I highly doubt that this is needed. I did a search for “kids”, and this is what I got
.
We have a vast number of articles geared towards kids/youth: http://www.wikihow.com/Category:Youth
Additionally, the term “wikiHow” is trademarked and using it commercially or otherwise would be copyright infringement.
Unless you got our permission to use our work elsewhere.
Using wikiHow articles on other websites is perfectly fine, in fact, it is even encouraged. What Matt was talking about is the brand name “wikiHow”. The permissions needed to use that lies entirely with the owner of wikiHow, aka Jack. As others have mentioned there’s no reason to have a “kids only” wikiHow. We have an entire category dedicated to them, as Matt showed.
Hi James! Welcome back to wikiHow. (For those who don’t know, James is a former admin who started editing wikiHow before I did.) I had a similar idea back in 2006 around teen content, but eventually thought that regular wikiHow had so much youth content that the world did not need a teen wikiHow. I think a kids how-to site is an interesting idea. I used to enjoy working on the kids projects for wikiBooks. While we have a youth category, not every how-to is written at the elementary school level. That being said, there have been a few wiki projects aimed at kids and I don’t think any of them have really taken off. In addition, having children as contributors would be tricky due to COPPA law. And if you did get permission to brand the site as a wikiHow product, the site would need to stay a wiki because you’ve got “wiki” in the name.
