Andrew we have writer’s haven on here but okay I am writing one, I am on a break atm

This is different, this is for “Fantasy” only, where you may do a show and tell, discuss the productive ways and such.Writers Haven 2 is for any kind of writing.

I hope to see you here again soon.

Okay:slight_smile:I will continue my fantasy adventure probably over the weekend when my sisters visit their mums and I am alone with my dad and the cats:smiley:

Where do you start a story?

This it seems, is the first thing which many people decide to do first. Find a point in which to tell your tale, it would seem best to start at a beginning… But, this is not always the best place to start. A prologue! I hear you cry… Nope, not all tales need one. Back story (History of Peoples or Events), maybe there is room for one. But this is still not the best place to start.

The best place to start your tale is… Just where you feel it should start.

Now this sounds like a cheap cop out, but it is not.
I started my book with no thought as to where it would go, nor had I any idea of a back story. It was after I had established some characters and places that, I really did not know why these events that took place, were actually having an impact. Why did Geldrid have to find his friend, and if he did, why was “he” so important? What was he (Geldrid) fearing? How will this drive the next chapters?
And so, the back story began, the need to explain his importance to get to his friend. And many other things too!

I did not notice at the time, but I was actually writing a back story as I wrote the chapters…

So, this it seemed, prompted me to re-write, the first chapter. But I soon saw that the first chapter was evolving into something that, I, still did not feel was a start.

A few months later, and another two opening chapters…

I settled down to read my work. It was going well until, I realized that I had written my starting chapter. I was amazed! Chapter 1 was there on my screen. What appeared to be my second chapter, was just a short edit away from being my opening pages.

Starting a tale can, but mostly wont happen until you get so far into telling your tale. What you may see at first as being chapter 1, will most likely be chapter three or four.

And this is just a beginning… No! No, this is your sales pitch!

Chapter 1, is what sells your tale to the reader/publisher.

This must be polished, and presented well (like the whole book). Most people know if they will buy your book from the first few lines. Grab them! This is why your first chapter, wont actually be the first chapter you write. You will gain confidence as you write, thus turning better work out, and setting your world up. It is in “this” world that you will find your start.

Once you find your start, then you must finish your tale…

How did you find your start, what made you choose to start at that particular point, and would you share it with us here?

If you will share your start, just the opening paragraph will do.Come, join in the fantasy and discuss.

I find that the story may start with just one character sticking in your head. And then it grows, a plot forms and then you build up on the details as you work on it.

As I said, there is no real way to start a book/short story. Just that it is where YOU feel it should start.

And to build upon a character which sticks with you for whatever reason, is as good a reason as any!

Thanks for joining in and giving your opinion. I hope you will come back and get involved more.

Again, your own way is the best way! If we all started a tale or two the same way… Reading would get stagnant quite quickly!

And after reading you first chapter, I can say however, your start is well concieved and executed.

:smiley:thank you! I still need to make some improvements still:smiley:

Improvements will come as you write more… As you push your way through later chapters you will see your writing improve (It will be noticeable as you re-read from the first chapter). It is here that you will be able to adjust your work to keep inline with the later chapters.

But like I said before, your start was where you thought it best to be the start.  :)

3/4 of writing is re-writing.

Yeah but when you have Autism, you can re read it dozens of times and never notice it:stuck_out_tongue:that is my problem

Not always, but mostly it can be…

Glad you have joined in here, and I hope you can contribute more to this thread.

That is why we joined a writing forum… Help, if not always helpful is available to you. Even if the help is not clear at first, there are many others to ask. I however just give suggestions which may or may not help.

Well we will all learn from each other and that is life for a author

We are still discussing Book Starts! If any of you folks have anything to add or discuss your starts please do so!

It all depends on everything. There’s no exact way of writing a book.

Well, I’m writing a fantasy book, and I’ve started it with my own way. Mostly, I used to check out how to start the beginnings, but then I felt it was copyright, so I write it my own way:slight_smile:

That is a good way to start but searching for help online isn’t always copyrighting, there are places such as wikiHow that help you begin your story and all throughout the whole thing and this isn’t copyrighting. Only if you copy and paste the entire thing and copy anything that has been registered under the copyrighting or trademarking (though some trademarking is okay depending on where it is coming from) then you will get into deep trouble.

Anything else is totally fine!

Which is what I said, there is only the start which you feel is the best place to start. Though I did state that your start probably wont be your opening pages.

I have had many folk say this too.

Welcome and I hope you will join in more here at WTF!
