Someone discovers that dozens of items in a museum are counterfeits of the real things. Copies of famous paintings and casts of original statues are found in every room. There is no video surveillance of a culprit switching out the real items for the fakes, but the only people in the museum after close are the custodians and guards who say they have no idea how it happened and never saw any museum guests touch the items.
The lenders are furious and demand to know where the originals are. An investigator and his partner camp out in the museum without the workers’ knowledge. A custodian climbs up behind a security camera mounted on the ceiling and, in one swift motion, removes the tape, replacing it with a loop of the room when it was empty. He removes a painting from its mount, unrolls a copy from the garbage cart he wheels around, removes the real painting, and replaces it with the copy.
Plot twist: One investigator goes home to take care of his pregnant wife, and the other investigator follows the custodian to a giant mansion where he drops off the real painting in exchange for a thick envelope. The investigator goes to the lender of painting that evening to tell him what he saw. The lender thanks him, reaches below his desk, and shoots the investigator multiple times. He tells his butler to take care of the body.
The investigator who left finds out his partner is missing. He looks through his partner’s notes and finds the address of the mansion. He visits the mansion, but he can’t get anywhere near, as there’s new construction.
At a meeting with police, museum representatives, and lenders, the lender who loaned the museum the painting is in much better spirits, telling everyone they’re doing a great job. He invites the surviving investigator to come to his home for dinner, as he’s throwing a little party for the museum people. The investigator reluctantly agrees to go, and the lender says a car will pick him up.
The car comes to pick up the investigator that night and drives him to the mansion listed in his partner’s notes. The investigator immediately feels uncomfortable but goes inside anyway. All the lights are on, but no one is there. He walks around and sees all the missing paintings and sculptures.
The lender appears behind the investigator and tells him he hired the custodians to steal the items so he could sue the museum and get out of debt. He tells the investigator he killed his partner. The investigator, in a rage, loses his temper and runs at the lender. The butler shoots the investigator before he can reach the lender. The lender tells the butler to take care of the body. The lender sues the museum for millions and wins.
