If you've recently lost your job, getting unemployment benefits can be a nerve-racking prospect – especially if you've never gone through the process before. When reviewing your claim, you'll be interviewed by a worker in the unemployment office. You'll also have to answer similar questions about your job search and income every week you claim benefits.   1. If you receive a notice for a phone interview, it may include additional paperwork that you need to fill out before the phone interview. The purpose is to ensure that the interview runs smoothly.
    • Get your paperwork in as soon as possible. Don't wait until the last minute, especially if you have to rely on the mail to get your paperwork to the unemployment office.

    • It's appropriate to address the interviewer as "sir" or "ma'am." You might also want to ask from the outset what they prefer to be called.

  1. The key to continued eligibility for unemployment benefits is that you are able and available for work. If you weren't both able and available all 7 days of the week, your benefits may be reduced. [7]
