Best home remedies for my dog's diarrhea?

My poor dog has diarrhea. I’ve got a vet appointment scheduled for tomorrow, but in the meantime, I really want to make sure she’s comfortable. I’m worried specifically about dehydration, I know dogs can get into a kind of dangerous territory when they have diarrhea and don’t drink enough water. My girl seems fine otherwise, but are there any warning signs I should look out for? Any tips on making sure she’s comfortable? Any home remedies for diarrhea I can try?

Aw, poor pup! I used to have a dog that was chronically sick and I learned a lot about this lovely topic. So, in terms of dehydration, pick up some electrolyte replenisher from the pet shop. This stuff is basically Pedialyte but for dogs—it will keep them from losing all of the nutrients they need when they’re dealing with the stomach bug. If you can’t run to the store but you’re worried your dog isn’t drinking enough, add a little bit of low-sodium chicken broth to their water. They’ll smell the chicken and want to drink more than they normally would. So long as your girl seems generally okay though, she’s probably comfortable. Just make sure she drinks tons of water and take her out to use the bathroom way more often than you normally would.

Instead of the food you'd normally feed her, trying offering her some boiled chicken and rice, plus some pumpkin puree (where the only ingredient is pumpkin). These foods are on the blander side and will hopefully help your dog's stomach settle. The fiber in the pumpkin is to help the dog's stool firm up. Hope your dog feels better soon!

Dehydration can definitely be a concerning problem when your dog has diarrhea! If she doesn't seem to be responding well to her usual water, try giving her a warm, mild soup. Something with chicken broth in it. She might like that better and getting all that liquid in her will help with the dehydration.
