How have prices changed over time?

In a perfect world, things would always be priced the same over time, don’t you think? Actually, in a perfect world, everything would always get cheaper. But the reality is that we have this pesky little thing called “inflation,” which makes the price of things go up over time. This happens for a few reasons: things get more expensive to produce, demand rises, retailers want more money, etc.

How has inflation impacted the price of common products over time? Well, let’s take a look at some averages in the U.S. The changes might surprise you!

  • Eggs: 2005: $1.21 → 2025: $4.95
  • White Bread: 2005: $1.00 → 2025: $1.93
  • Chicken: 2005: $1.03 → 2025: $2.06
  • Milk: 2005: $3.30 → 2025: $4.10
  • Electricity (per KWH): 2005: $0.09 → 2025: $0.18
  • Gas: 2005: $1.82 → 2025: $3.21
  • Coffee: 2020: $4.17 → 2025: $7.02
  • Steak: 2005: $5.60 → 2025: $8.28
  • Soft Drinks: 2005: $1.55 → 2025: $2.09
  • Rice: 2005: $0.73 → 2025: $1.01
  • Homes: 2012: $274,000 → 2025: $457,300

And to put all that in perspective, something that cost $1.00 in 2005 would cost $1.63 today in 2025. Of course, everything’s value is different, and changes at a different pace, but it gives you a solid idea of where things stand!
