Even More Horror Movie Trivia
If you’re into horror movies, you probably already know that it’s one of the most beloved and diverse genres to ever grace the silver screen. From supernatural poltergeists to ruthless serial killers to incomprehensible aliens to gut-busting parodies and homages, there’s truly something for everyone to love when it comes to scary movies. So it’s no surprise that there’s also plenty of quirky, surprising, and sometimes grisly history behind your favorite fright flicks. Here are plenty of interesting, freaky factoids that’ll blow your mind:
- The 2002 film The Ring , about a cursed videotape, is actually an adaptation of a Japanese film from 1998, which is itself an adaptation of a book released in 1991, which has 5 sequels.
- Jamie Lee Curtis was cast as the protagonist in Halloween (1978) partly as a tribute to Alfred Hitchcock, who cast Curtis’ mother, Janet Leigh, in Psycho (1960).
- Stephen King, the author of the original The Shining novel, famously dislikes Stanley Kubrick’s iconic film adaptation.
- In the classic horror movie The Amityville Horror (1979), the crew coated actor Rod Steiger’s head in honey in order to attract a swarm of flies in one notorious scene.
- David Cronenberg’s The Fly (1986) is a reimagining of a 1959 film of the same name. Vincent Price, who starred in the 1959 film, thought the remake “went a little too far.”
- In the classic 1973 film The Exorcist , Jason Miller was initially meant to be hit in the chest by the demon’s vomit, but a prop malfunction caused him to be hit in the face. His on-screen reaction is genuine.
- New Line Cinema was facing bankruptcy when the company released A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), but the film was such a hit that it saved the production company.
- The cabin used as the primary set in The Evil Dead (1981) also served as the crew’s housing while filming. It had no plumbing and was in such disrepair that by the end of filming, the crew was burning furniture to keep warm.
