What is Italian brainrot?
What’s going on here?
Italian brainrot is a meme that’s sweeping the sigma-savvy minds of the youth. Basically, people are using AI image generators to create mashups of animals and objects, like an alligator with the body of a bomber plane, or a shark with sneakers. Then, they’re naming them nonsensical, vaguely Italian-sounding names and calling it “Italian brainrot.” If you don’t get it, you’re not alone. Just don’t worry about it too much.
Where did Italian brainrot start?
Who can really say? The best we can tell, it got popular somewhere in January 2025, when TikTok user @eZburger401 uploaded a video of Tralalero Tralala (that’s the shark with sneakers btw) accompanied by a text-to-speech song. From there, other people began generating their own animals, and the rest is history.
What is brainrot slang for?
“Brainrot” is a slang term that refers generally to the state of being online so much that your brain turns to mush and you start saying things like “skibidi rizzler” or “sigma gyatt.” These days, in the big year of 2025, it refers to almost any nonsensical meme.
What is an example of brainrot?
This quiz.
Is brainrot a real issue? Yes and no. Mostly, it’s a joke about being chronically online, and what that does to your brain. No, the brains of the youth aren’t melting and dripping out of their nostrils from being on their phones too much. That said, studies have shown that too much screen time can impact things like mental health, social behaviors, and attention spans, so there are some real concerns.
