Ever had to put your hair up but then getting that sinking feeling of- I don't have a hair tie with me? Instead of scrambling for a rubber band that will pull out strands, grab a pencil, pen, or other long, thin object and keep it up in an improvised messy bun.
Steps
-
Pull your hair back about halfway up the back of your head as if about to make a ponytail. [1] X Research source
-
Hold the ponytail from the base of it and use your other hand to bring it into a ball and hold it. [2] X Research sourceAdvertisement
-
Stick a pen, pencil, or like object through the bottom so that it sticks out of the top. [3] X Research source
-
Still holding the bun with one hand, take the pen and make a 360 degree turn until it completes one circle around the bun.
-
Using the pen, lift up a small strand of hair up from the top of your head just enough for it to go through.
-
Pull the pen or pencil gently, tucking it under the strand so it's secure. [4] X Research source
-
Release. If it seems to be staying, shake your head three times. If it wiggles, try again.
-
Finished.

QuestionHow do I make a messy bun with extremely thick hair?Community AnswerGet your hair slightly wet first it. Put in a bun. When you are done, pull extra stands out that will make it messier. If you don't use hair spray, it will make it more natural and messy looking.
-
QuestionIf you just got out from the shower, can you make a messy bun without using anything at all?Community AnswerNo. Instead, just wrap your hair around a towel or do harmless hair styles, because your hair is very fragile when it is loose and wet.
-
QuestionIs this a good hairstyle for teachers?Community AnswerYes, it looks sophisticated and can be done quickly.

Tips
- You can also make a bun with a foam piece—the ones sold at beauty stores—or a sock. First, put your hair up in a ponytail, put it into the foam piece and twist it. You can literally do your hair in two minutes. Your hair has to be long though, at least a few inches past your shoulders. Thanks
