QuestionHow can I support a friend who is experiencing gender dysphoria?Dr. Marissa Floro, Ph.D. is a Psychologist and Instructor at Stanford University’s Weiland Health Initiative and adjunct faculty at the University of San Francisco. Dr. Floro received her Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from Loyola University Chicago, focusing on the intersections of race, attraction, and gender. Dr. Floro’s continued clinical, teaching, and advocacy work focuses on sexual and gender diversity, racial identity and belonging, and liberation from oppressive systems and structures.Try to do some outside research about gender dysphoria and the ways that different people experience it so your friend doesn't have to explain the term to you, or what it's like for them. Instead, just ask your friend how you can support them, as gender dysphoria looks different for different people. They might not have an answer right away or they may need some time to think about it, and that's okay!
