  • Question
My clownfish won't stop laying eggs. What should I do?
    Dan Peckford
    Community Answer
Nothing! You are lucky enough to witness one of nature's miracles. Clownfish can lay up to 1000 eggs at once! If you do not wish to raise them all, I suggest you get in touch with a breeder of clownfish or a local aquarium store and ask about re-homing all those little guys.
  • Question
Do I have to get a live rock or can I use sand?
    Community Answer
Live rocks are the best, no matter what type of fish you are breeding.
  • Question
Where do Clownfish produce their eggs?
    Community Answer
In different hiding spots that they find on live rock. The live rock will provide the fish with hiding places and will give a surface on which the clownfish can lay and care for their eggs.
  • Question
If I have two pairs, and don't want them to breed. What should I do?
    Community Answer
The best thing to do is to leave the eggs. Once they hatch, the others will eat the fry.
  • Question
    Will peppermint shrimp eat clownfish?
    Community Answer
It depends. Usually, if the fish are close to dying, the peppermint shrimp will eat them (since peppermints dine on fish that are already dead). However, I don't think this is very likely.

You can breed a clown fish by reading the passage above. You need good water parameters and good salinity.
  • Question
How many of the eggs will survive to be a juvenile?
    Patrick
    Community Answer
The exact amount varies, but keep in mind that fish mainly lay many eggs as not many will hatch, and even fewer will grow to full size.
  • Question
Do I have to move my other fish, so they do not eat the clownfish eggs when breeding?
    Community Answer
Yes. Even their own parents eat them, too. That is why this post asks you to move the egg or fry when hatched.
  • Question
    Are clown fish funny?
    Community Answer
No. While entertaining to watch, clown fish are not named after their characteristics, but rather their appearance.
  • Question
Can I breed my yellow tangs?
    Community Answer
Yes, as long as you have enough space and resources/ experience for this process.
  • Question
Can I substitute any of the materials when breeding clownfish?
    Community Answer
Clown fish will sometimes lay eggs on a terracotta pot in place of live rock.
  • Question
Why do my fry still look like fry when they are now 20 days old?

The food may not have enough nutrients or the water quality is bad.
