You must be licensed to own any pistol. You need a special carry permit to carry a pistol outside of your home, and it must be unloaded, locked and stored in a gun box. You must register any firearms you purchase/own in New York. While you may own rifles in New York, you must keep them unloaded and locked away inside your home, because it is illegal to carry and/or openly carry any weapons outside.
